It's probably cheating to use Thanksgiving as the thing that makes me happy two Sundays in a row, but given that I spent my afternoon and evening with some of my favorite people in the world, eating and drinking and talking, how could I not?

I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but I'm extremely lucky to have a circle of in-person friends that I see regularly and that values my company. I know so many adults who don't have many local friends, but I managed to land in a place with a few college connections that then grew into the friend group that I have now -- and that still includes some of those same people. My older and more far-off friends are also important to me, of course, but it's not the same as knowing a dozen people who live within easy driving distances, and who prioritize spending time together. I can count on them, and they can count on me, and it makes me so happy.

These folks are my community, and I intend to maintain that community for as long as I can.

I ended up being too busy attending WorldCon (and staying up late hanging out in the evenings) to have much time to write about WorldCon. Now it's our last night and I'm full of so much to say that I don't know where to start. I attended so many great panels and readings (and a few duds), reconnected with a few people and met a ton more, and basically had the best time I have ever had at a con entirely because of the people. It seems clear that the way to fix the feelings of social isolation I sometimes deal with at cons is to know people. Talk to people, get introduced to people, and spend a good amount of time hanging out with people I already know. In this case, having [personal profile] renay, [personal profile] justira, and [personal profile] violacea as my social center gave me a comfort zone, and the opportunity to be introduced to more people helped me make more connections -- and hopefully lasting ones. I want to talk more about specific panels and events, but that will be better served by a fresher brain, so I'll leave it for now.

If you've followed the news at all, or follow me on Twitter, you already know that Lady Business did not win the Hugo award for Best Fanzine. File 770 is a deserving winner with an amazing community and a long history in fandom, and its editor, Mike Glyer (who also won Best Fanwriter), did amazing work last year to track and report on the developing Hugo controversy, among everything else that goes on. Really, it's an honor to have taken a strong second place (as borne out by the stats), especially in our first year on the ballot. The ceremony was excellent, both entertaining and well-run -- and fortunately Fanzine was pretty early in the program, so we were able to sit back, relax, and enjoy the rest of the show! And then we had an awesome night, making the rounds of the parties, including George R. R. Martin's legendary Hugo Losers Party. (After File 770's win was announced, we literally turned to each other and said "now we can go to the Losers Party!") Even if we're never nominated again (although I do hope we will be), the experiences we had last night will be with me always. If you were there to be a part of it, thank you. And to everyone who voted for us and supported us in so many ways, THANK YOU.

Although next year's Helsinki WorldCon is probably out of my reach, I am delighted that San Jose, CA won its bid to host in 2018. Barring some catastrophic event or schedule conflict, I will be there, and I hope to get the chance to form such wonderful community bonds again. Come if you can! I'd love to see you there.

So I never did get around to posting about Bryn Mawr or Boston, and here I already am in Chicago. The short version is that I'm having a very nice trip, filled with seeing friends old and new -- so many people at Bryn Mawr, quality time with A and hanging out with her friends, meet ups with two separate college friends and then the marvelous [personal profile] tarysande in Boston. Then today was basically a continuous meet-up, going from one friend to the next: lunch with [tumblr.com profile] rhiannon42, coffee and a walk around with [personal profile] tanyad, and dinner with one of my best friends from BMC, who lives in the Chicago suburbs and whom I hadn't seen for several years. (Seven years? Can it really have been that long? I think it may have been for another Chicago wedding, back in 2007. Wow.) Then tomorrow is [personal profile] lassarina's wedding, and I know several folks who will be there, and the connections just keep coming.

I like a lot of things about traveling, but maybe one of the best things is that I know people in so many parts of the world, such that almost everywhere I go, there will be a friend there. That's pretty amazing. And you know, in part, I have the Internet to thank for that. Thank you, Internet, for creating such a wonderful wide network of amazing people to be in my life.

Heading off for the annual holiday visit to San Diego and T's mom in a few minutes. We'll be back on Wednesday. I'm taking both phone and iPad with me, so I'll likely be around some, although probably more on Tumblr and Twitter than here (easier to navigate using the mobile devices).

Safe travels! Enjoy/survive your family visits, as applicable! A happy holiday to anybody celebrating one, and an excellent weekend to one and all! I probably don't say this often enough, but I love you all: old friends, new friends, friends I've just met, and I'm so, so lucky to be a part of this awesome online community.

All my best, happiest thoughts to you and yours.

Let me set the scene: It's a Monday morning, early. I'm a little cranky because I worked Saturday and now I'm working Monday and it's going to be a long day, not to mention how it's kicking off a six-day workweek.

Then a new student comes up to the desk and asks me an intelligent and interesting question, one that I've never thought of in the five years I've worked here, and I am, one again, reminded why I'm really here. Sometimes, my job rocks.

(The student who confesses to having a two-month overdue book and pays her fine with nary a whimper helps, too.)

I'm about to go offline for the day, so this is my opportunity to wish you all a Happy New Year! Here's to new beginnings and fresh starts, which I think we can all use right now.

My plans for the evening are modest: beading, dinner, and a small party with good friends. Excellent. A toast to you all, and to an excellent 2011.

1. Day Five of actual summer weather, arriving at the end of September as per usual. Especially well timed because I had yesterday off work, and then today I had an offsite staff meeting that ended with delicious ice cream. Mmm, delicious ice cream. It's supposed to cool off tomorrow, but I have enjoyed it so far.

2. The magic number is four.

3. A brand new Final Fantasy Anonymeme! Already eyeing more than one prompt...

Time to go revel in dozens of fabulous fanworks. I've spent the last couple of days browsing, and there's some really great stuff in there. I'll probably try to do a rec list later, but for now I just suggest going over there to wander around, dip into anything that catches your fancy. Something for everyone!

For the second year in a row, I got a Paine/Nooj piece as my gift, which is awesome. :D Small Steps by Lesca Fenix. Definitely worth checking out, especially if you are a fan of P/N and/or CS4 stories.

As for me, I wrote two stories: one prompt from my initial assignment and one pinch-hit. Both FF12, one Balthier-centric and one about Al-Cid.

Secret Identities: Balthier/Reddas (and filled with spoilers).

Human Resources: a bit of Al-Cid character study, chosen not only because I found the prompt intriguing but because it gave me the chance to work closely with the character, who I expect to figure prominently in my [livejournal.com profile] megaflare_ff story.

Didn't manage any Moogle Fluff this time, mostly because of timing, although I did draft most of a story that will likely appear as Chocobo Down.

Also, I mentioned a few times in this space that I was hoping to write one of my other prompts from my original assignment. I actually started that one first, but then it ballooned into a many-thousand-word monster, and it became clear that I was never going to finish it on time. I actually just put the final touches on the draft today. 18,391 words. Can I have a yikes? I don't think I've ever written a story that long in one shot. Anyway, I'll let it sit for a little while, then clean it up and post it. Maybe not for Chocobo Down, because it's drifted pretty far from the original request, but I will definitely get it out there.

Yay for FFEX! Yay for more prompts on the way for Chocobo Down! Yay for the mods omg. If you see Sev, Ira, and Nay around, be extra-nice to them, okay? They put in a hell of a lot of work to make this exchange happen, and they just pulled off two in less than a year. Mods: you rule.

This may be the most amazing group effort, not to mention the best example of the kindness of strangers, that I've ever seen: Metafilter bands together to help two women escape a dodgy situation. (Note: even knowing that the story has a happy ending, the thread has some pretty disturbing talk about human trafficking. Be prepared.)

If anyone ever tries to tell you that the Internet and social media are useless wastes of time, and/or needs to rekindle some faith in the goodness of humanity, just point them at that thread. Wow.

Thumbs up

There are cats on my bed. I approve of this development.

Today was "wander around Boston" day. I got a look at many of the historic sights I'd never seen before, plus a look at the locks on the Charles River and a swarm of fish waiting their turn to get through them. Then some tea, and a couple of chocolate shops, and then a really awesome bookstore that focuses on travel books, but in a really broad sense, including not just guidebooks but travel writing, cartography, books on history and culture and even regional fiction. And then everything is organized geographically rather than by genre, which I found to make for some really awesome browsing. I contented myself with only one book, but it was difficult.

Then it was trivia with [livejournal.com profile] amybang's friends, which we didn't win (but I came up with a pretty awesome baseball answer, if I do say so myself), but I had fun, and plus I got to see a friend from college whom I hadn't seen for years and years. And now settling in with the aforementioned cats, who are currently sleeping on the couch that is about to become my bed. A distinct advantage over the hotel room where I was staying before this. I wish you could stay at a hotel and check out some cats, like you used to be able to check out a VCR before hotels had movies on demand. I would totally pay extra for that service.

Tomorrow, if the weather holds, we're going to go be tourists in Salem, where I've also never been. Wish us luck.

Ahhh, an excellent start to a birthday week: a work bowling party that was a lot of fun (not to mention on work time, which means I got a half day at work), followed by a drink and a chat with a co-worker I haven't often gotten a chance to really sit down and talk with. Then drinks with G & C, followed by more friends and a yummy Italian dinner -- some of the best lasagna I've had in a long time. Good food, good drinks, good company: I can't ask for more, really.

Why birthday week? Because it's not over! :D I have lunch with the librarians planned for Tuesday, [livejournal.com profile] amybang is flying in Friday (for which I will take another half day), Saturday we're taking this most excellent looking tour, and then Sunday I am hosting a birthday brunch. I've decided that I like spreading out my birthday celebration this way; it gives me more to look forward to.

Last but oh so not least, I can't let the end of the day go by without acknowledging the efforts of a certain conspiracy. :D :D :D It was a fabulous surprise, and I adore you all. <3

Just back from a really nice family Thanksgiving dinner, up at my Grandma's house. Food, yum. Turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, beans, rolls... it was all there, except for the sad omission of pumpkin pie. No pumpkin pie! I am scandalized! T did make tasty brownies and some excellent soft gingerbread cookies, though, so I am pleasantly stuffed with dessert. But I think we may have to rectify this situation and make some pie for ourselves this weekend.

Even more important, of course, was the company, with the special addition this year of [livejournal.com profile] oswulf, who was in town with his wife for the holiday. Most of the local family were there, too, and it was good to see them all, but D isn't just my cousin -- he was my best friend for many, many years. So the opportunity to hang out with him for even a few hours is precious. I am lucky to have a family I enjoy spending time with.

I'm lucky in so many ways, really, and it's good to have a day to reflect on that. It's been a tough year for me and mine, but that doesn't negate the many things I have to be thankful for: solid marriage, financial stability, steady job that I mostly like, good relationships with co-workers and family, and so many good friends, including those of you reading this entry right now. You've probably all noticed by now that I don't tend to get emotional on people, but that doesn't mean that I don't love you all. And so here's a round of Happy Thanksgiving, all around. I'm grateful to be a part of this community.

This is just about the awesomething thing ever. And I mean ever.

World Science Festival 2009: Bobby McFerrin Demonstrates the Power of the Pentatonic Scale from World Science Festival on Vimeo.

I got chills watching it, seriously. And the grin on my face got wider and wider. It always amazes me just how strongly music can act as a common language among people.

I worked a six-day week back in April, so I took today off and am now basking in the glory of a four-day weekend with almost nothing planned. T is going to a beach-clean/photo shoot on Sunday, and I might come along, but otherwise I envision a lot of kicking back. I already spent a nice morning with three of my favorite things: leftover pizza for breakfast, my kitties, and Deep Space Nine on DVD. The rest of the day will likely feature a pedicure (it's summer, time to give my toes more regular help) and some writing time in Panera, but it's nice not to have to decide yet.

Plans!

Lately (if by lately, you mean "for the last several months"), T and I have been discussing a possible a trip to Italy. In theory, we try to take an international trip every other year, but it hasn't worked out that way, largely because we were planning to go on a family trip to China last year, which then fell through. So we turned our sights back toward Europe. I've wanted to go to Italy for very many years. I still remember sitting in class with JR, first in Form of the City, but also in pretty much every architecture class we took together, looking at slides of temples and palaces and piazzas and nudging each other: "Let's go there. And there. And there, and there." Thanks to my trips to Paris, Barcelona, and Japan, I've now been to some of those places. But so many of those pictures were taken in Italy. And of those, many of the most compelling were in Rome. So Rome has been at the top of my "places to go before I die" list for a long, long time.

Today, we booked a hotel and a flight. Leaving at the end of April, going for a week. Right now we're only planning on Rome, although a day trip to Pompeii or somewhere else within a do-able bus ride could be in the cards. We have a little time to plan.

After all this time talking about it, thinking about it, dreaming about it, now it looks like it's really going to happen. I don't quite believe it yet, though. Probably I won't actually believe it until I'm sitting on the plane.

Sitting on the couch with a glass of wine, a napping kitty on each side, my West Wing DVDs running, and short ribs braising in the oven. As a way to spend my last day of Christmas vacation, it ain't half bad.

But for now I still have a few cool things to share (from the happy joy part of the election this time, which definitely occupies plenty of my mindspace along with the sad side).

First, [livejournal.com profile] bottle_of_shine pointed me toward these presidential election maps that are altered to reflect voting percentages and population. The county-level maps are particularly interesting, and a good reminder that the red/blue divide in the US isn't really East versus West or coast versus central; it's urban versus rural. And also, that there's a lot more purple going on than we truly realize.

I remember looking at the maps from 2004 back at the time, and it's especially thought-provoking to compare the last two maps in this election and the last. Fewer bright red areas, and those that still exist are far more squeezed by various shades of purple around them. Quite a change for just four years. There are a lot of reasons for that, and many reasons to believe that the trend will shift back, eventually. But still interesting, and heartening for a dyed-in-the-wool Democrat like me.

Then, for some warm fuzzies, check out some photos that are worth several thousand words and a huge collection of newspaper front pages announcing Obama's victory

And finally: http://www.change.gov

Somehow, just the mere existence of this site makes me happy. 75 days to go.

This is how hearts and minds are won.

Thanks to Jed for the link, and for the continual encouragement to not just vote against Proposition 8, but to speak out against it and fight for what matters.

By the morning, we should know.

Besides being 8/8/08 (I wanted to post at 8:08, but the pesky work thing got in the way), today is also Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor's Porch Day, which as anyone who's ever grown the stuff knows is a key day to observe.

I had a zucchini muffin for breakfast to celebrate. Warm from the oven. Tasty stuff! (Also the only way I will eat zucchini.)

Also, my aunts are having their (30-years-overdue) wedding reception tomorrow, and if that's not a reason to celebrate, nothing is.

It's a perfect summer day, I'm playing hooky from work (with advance notice and permission, so maybe it's not real hooky, but I still feel like I'm getting away with something), and there's going to be a baseball game played just down the street from me in a couple of hours.

Yeah, I think I know what I'm doing this afternoon.

I don't remember the last time I took a long weekend just for the hell of it, with no agenda or travel or out-of-town guests or any other reason besides the fact that I've just been piled under work for weeks and I just needed a break. So far so good.
