"When you said I should start taking more cases, I didn't think you had this kind of thing in mind." Jessica lowered herself into a squat, hands on her knees, and tilted her head to get a better look through the grate. "What's next, rescuing kittens from trees?"

She didn't have to turn around; she could all but hear Trish rolling her eyes. )

There's a lot of fandom cross-pollination between Critical Role and The Adventure Zone, which makes a lot of sense -- they're both story-focused Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, a family of nerds playing their beloved games and sharing them with an audience -- but despite my love for CR, I'd been a bit reluctant to dive in to TAZ. But then I learned that the current campaign would be wrapping up soon (I understand it's recently done so), and I decided to give it a shot. I'd been listening to it every now and again as I had time, but it didn't suck me in as completely as Critical Role did... and then I reached The Eleventh Hour, which is the fifth main story arc. I'd noticed the GM's storytelling and the players' character work improving over time, but everything took a serious level up in the previous arc (The Crystal Kingdom), and early in The Eleventh Hour everything solidified, pulling me into the story to the point that I'm now dying to know what happens next.

It used to be that I never wrote fic for a canon that I hadn't finished, but anyone who knows me and my relationship kinks (specifically, separation and reunion) will probably not be surprised that I was taken by the urge to write about one particular scene. Cut for spoilers. )

I'm sure this moment has been ficced a thousand times, but I learned my lesson about looking for fic when I'm behind on a canon from Dragon Age. ;) So for now I'll just present my own quick take on the scene; maybe once I've finished the Balance storyline I'll revisit it with the full knowledge of anything relevant that happens later. Note, I'm still early in the arc that follows Eleventh Hour (The Suffering Game; I've only listened to the first episode) so please no spoilers for anything later in comments.

Title: Inapproriate
Fandom: FFXII
Rating: Teen-ish
Wordcount: 7902
Characters: Ashe/Balthier, Ashe/Al-Cid, Penelo, Ondore
Spoilers: Yes but nothing really blatant.
Notes: A few months ago, I was complaining about not having any fic ideas, and [personal profile] renay pounced on me with a suggestion of Ashe/Balthier and fake dating. This is the result. Thanks to Nay for the bunny and to [personal profile] justira for a super-helpful beta read. Also thanks to Square Enix for releasing The Zodiac Age, thereby giving me the opportunity to put the characters' voices back in my head.

Summary: Beset by advisors who are pressuring her to marry, Queen Ashe reacts by bringing sky pirate Balthier as her escort to an important state event. Just having a bit of fun at her council's expense... right?

Title: A Guardian's Legacy
Fandom: FFX
Rating: Teen-ish
Wordcount: A lot. Currently at 29/46 chapters.
Characters: Auron, Kinoc, Braska, Jecht, Paine, Baralai, most of the main cast of FFX, lots of OCs. Main pairing is Auron/OC, with a side of Paine/Baralai, and others (particularly Tidus/Yuna) in the background
Spoilers: Yes, lots, for FFX and FFX-2.
Notes: As I mentioned in my monthly writing goals post, I decided to take on a different kind of project this month: cleaning up and reposting an older story that hadn't yet made it onto AO3. Although the posting is only about two-thirds done (I plan to put up two or so more chapters every day until it's done), I finished the big editing pass today, so I thought it would be a good time to share my progress so far.

Summary: The story of Auron -- warrior monk, guardian, legend -- and the family he left behind.

Title: A Home by the Woods
Fandom: Critical Role
Rating: G-ish
Wordcount: 1000
Characters: Percy/Vex
Spoilers: Set vaguely after episode 89, spoilers to that point (though nothing too specific).
Notes: Written for the "a picture is worth a thousand words" challenge, where participants receive a photo prompt and write a story of exactly one thousand words based on it. My photo was Silent Shadow (Finding Alice) by Alexandra Bloch.

Also on AO3.

Summary: On the eve of an important event, Vex goes for a walk in the woods.

Vex always feels most herself in the forest.

From their childhood, Vax preferred the hustle and bustle of cities and towns; while Vex acknowledges the many charms of urban life (good food, cute shops -- and cute shopkeepers -- soft beds...), every so often she needs a day away, needs to trade cobblestones and buildings and prying eyes for soft earth and ancient trees. A day to breathe deeply of fresh air, feel dappled sunshine on her cheeks, listen for the small sounds of abundant life -- wind brushing through leaves, insects creaking, birds chirping, the cry of a distant eagle. Alone, with her bear and perhaps her brother for company, Vex can journey into the woods and find solace there.

Not every day, but some days, she awakens to wooden beams over her head instead of the open sky, and knows she needs to make her escape. On one such day, she rises, dresses, and wakes Trinket -- all quietly, so as not to disturb the man still asleep beside her -- and then goes, snagging some bread and cheese from the kitchen on her way out. As she leaves the castle for the woods, she feels her breath come easier, her shoulders lighten as the trees rise around her and the rustle of wind in the leaves fills her ears. An hour in, she finds a likely fallen log, covered with moss and dead leaves, and sits, pulling out her breakfast and scratching Trinket behind the ears while they watch the sun rise.

Title: The Rising Mist
Fandom: Dragon Age and Final Fantasy XII
Rating: Teen (moderate DA-typical violence)
Wordcount: 26,903
Characters: Ashe, Balthier, Basch, Penelo, Fran, Elissa Cousland, Alistair, Nathaniel Howe, Alim Surana, Sigrun, Leliana, Zevran, many others.
Spoilers: Yes, for all three games and Dragon Age 2. Contains a couple of DA:I references but no spoilers.
Notes: So. I kept saying I was working on it, and here it is. Only five and a half years later. Many, many apologies for the wait, but I'm really happy to be able to share it now. A couple of comments. First, because huge chunks of this were plotted and written before DA:I came out, it's not entirely compliant with its canon. Second, huge thanks to everyone who ever talked story meta with me (names that come to mind are [personal profile] sarasa_cat, [personal profile] lassarina, and [personal profile] alias_sqbr, although I'm sure that's not everybody), and especially to [personal profile] justira for providing an amazing and detailed beta read, above and beyond the call of duty. Finally, my love to everyone who left a review on Part One asking for more, or who commented with enthusiasm whenever I added WoI to my monthly writing goals. Knowing that people were looking forward to this second installment kept me pushing forward, and I look forward to being able to say it's finally completely done whenever I get to writing Part Three (currently targeted to publish in 2018).

Title: Past Time for Later
Fandom: Critical Role
Rating: PG-ish?
Wordcount: 1730
Characters: Vex/Percy
Spoilers: Yes, through Episode 73. Set vaguely afterwards; written between the airing of 73 and 74.
Notes: Like last time, this was a Perc'ahlia bunny that wouldn't leave me alone. Before it was an image; this time, a line of dialogue, but either way the story will be written. Once again, likely doomed to become non-canonical sooner rather than later, which is still not going to stop me. ;) Cleaned up from an earlier version that I posted on Tumblr.

Summary: Percy said they would "talk later"; Vex decides that the time for later is now.

Back in July, I took 15 Characters prompts on Tumblr, and wrote three stories, which I am just now getting around to cross-posting. Enjoy the wackiness; I know I did.

Title: Strange Bedfellow
Characters: Cassandra Pentaghast (Dragon Age)/Peggy Carter (MCU)
Prompt: "Fifteen and three discover a cat in their bed. Is it their cat? Did one of them bring home a cat? Is it a strange cat? you decide."
Notes: Bet you never thought of this pairing before. Bet you can't stop thinking about it now.

Title: Gather Ye Lords and Ladies Fair
Characters: Cassandra, Bethany Hawke, Paine (FFX-2)
Prompt: 3, 13, and 7 at a Renaissance faire
Notes: Modern AU, of course. Title is a lyric from a Blackmore's Night song.

Title: Insubordination
Characters: Peggy Carter, Natasha Romanoff, Carver Hawke
Prompt: Five and Fifteen are fighting viciously. Twelve steps in to break it up with a stunning revelation.
Notes: Set in the MCU, although don't think too hard about what timeframe. Let's call it an AU, since we're crossing it over with Dragon Age anyway.

Title: Opportunity
Fandom: Critical Role
Rating: PG-ish
Wordcount: 1309
Characters: Vex/Percy
Spoilers: Yes, MAJOR spoilers through Ep 69.
Notes: I rarely write my take on scenes that are probably going to happen soon in canon, but this bunny wouldn't leave me alone. Fully aware that this could be jossed as early as this Thursday. Cleaned up from an earlier version that I posted on Tumblr.

Summary: "Vex'ahlia felt a hand on her shoulder, and glanced up to see Vax'ildan staring down at her. Vax lifted his chin, flicked his eyes in Percy's direction, then back to her, followed by a nod so tiny that no one else would have seen it. But Vex knew her brother, and she knew exactly what that look meant. Talk to him. Don't let the opportunity slip away again." A quiet moment, a confession, a response.

Garrus flipped a credit chit at the bartender. "Another," he said.

The asari shot him a hard glare. "Haven't you had enough already?" In answer, Garrus glared back, and the asari picked up the chit with a heavy sigh. "Fine." She tapped the chit to the reader, then frowned. "Huh."

"What?" Garrus drained the dregs of his drink and pushed the glass to the side. "Something wrong?"

"It's been declined," the bartender said.

Garrus clicked his mandibles in irritation. "That can't be right," he said. "Try it again."

The bartender crossed her arms. "It won't work," she snapped. "Besides, like I said, you've had enough."

"Fine," Garrus rumbled. "I'm sure another bar on Omega would be happy to take my money."

"Be my guest." The bartender tossed the chit at his face, but before it could hit him, a hand snatched it neatly out of the air.

Garrus turned; the hand belonged to the human man sitting next to him at the bar. The man studied the chit, pushed it toward Garrus, and then pulled another out of his vest pocket. "Let me cover it," he said.

The asari looked at him, glanced at Garrus, then turned back to the man. "You sure?"

The man shrugged. "Why not? I hate to see a good fellow go begging for a drink. And I'll take another of these" -- he tilted his own empty glass in her direction -- "as long as you're at it."

"He's not exactly begging," the bartender grumbled, but she took the proffered chit and verified it before pouring the two drinks and handing them over. Then she slid around to the other side of the bar, as though to avoid any further conversation, not giving them another look.

Garrus turned toward his seatmate, who he thought might provide better company. )

Spoilers: For endgame of DA2
Notes: Written for the 2016 Wintersend Exchange (a lady-centric fanwork exchange for Dragon Age). This is the first time I've participated, and it was great fun. I need to browse more of the other entries.

Summary: After everything goes to hell in Kirkwall, Isabela whisks away her two girlfriends for a life on the high seas. Merrill and Hawke promise to obey their captain and learn to be good sailors -- a promise that lasts until the first time the ship is boarded.

Isabela stood on the edge of the dock, looking up at the forbidding stones of the Gallows for what she dearly hoped was the last time. "All right, that does it: we're getting out of here. All of us." She turned to face her girls: first Merrill, green eyes wide as she surveyed the damage, and then Hawke, whose face was unreadable. "Captain's orders."

Hawke shook her head. "But-- the mansion, I have to get--"

"Hawke." Isabela circled her fingers around Hawke's wrist, finding the bare skin above her gloves, and Hawke started, turning to face her. "Admit it: there's nothing you need in the mansion. Not really."

Her shoulders slumped in a half-sigh. "I suppose not," she murmured. "But-- Mother--"

"Mother would want you to be safe." Bethany stepped out from Hawke's other side and turned to face her sister. "Even if that means leaving all your physical memories behind." She half-smiled. "We did it often enough, before."

Hawke looked at Isabela, then back at Bethany. "I suppose you're right." She glanced at Isabela again. "The ship's ready, then?"

"Has been for weeks," Isabela replied, forcing a lightness into her voice that she didn't really feel. "Just waiting for some passengers." She turned to Merrill. "How about you, kitten? Do you need anything?"

Rating: PG
Wordcount: 1278
Characters: Leliana/Bethany Hawke
Spoilers: Minor, for all three games
Notes: Written for the Tumblr giveaway I ran last year, as a gift for [tumblr.com profile] defira85. She requested Leliana/Bethany for Femslash February, in the context of Bethany joining the Inquisition as the leader of a group of mages, and having an old crush on Leliana from their days in Lothering. This is a lovely idea, which I adopted as headcanon for my Marian Hawke's universe from the moment I got the prompt. :) Defira, I hope you enjoy it!

Also on AO3.

"Bethany Hawke." Leliana regarded the newcomer with a smile, and an outstretched hand. "I heard you had come to Skyhold, but I wasn't sure whether to believe it."

Bethany returned the smile and shook Leliana's hand with a warm, sure grip. She was dressed in dark blue robes, a sandalwood staff strapped to her back. Leliana almost hadn't recognized her, but the gentle, shy girl that she remembered from the Lothering Chantry shone through the same brown eyes, the same sweet smile. "Believe it or not, here I am."

Characters: f!Brosca/Leliana, Cole
Spoilers: Yes, for the Grey Warden quests in DAI
Notes: This is an extremely overdue fic for a giveaway run by [tumblr.com profile] womenofthedas something like a year and a half ago. I got an idea, then got stalled, then Inquisition gave me another idea, and then I got stalled on that one, too. But I determined that I would finish it, and now here it is. The giveaway winner, [tumblr.com profile] ezio-dafirenze, asked for a Brosca/Leliana story, to include a theme of dwarves adjusting to life on the surface. The Warden in this story is based on her description. Thanks to [personal profile] justira for beta reading, especially their help with the rock climbing part.

Also on AO3

Marali Brosca stood at the base of Skyhold and looked up, shading her eyes against the mid-afternoon sun. The climb didn't seem too formidable: the stones were rough-hewn, and she saw lots of good places for footholds. And high as they were, climbing them still seemed easier than knocking on the front door. )

"Goodness." Zevran Arainai stopped at the top of the endless stone stairway and pulled out a handkerchief to mop at his brow, taking a few deep breaths. "Did they really have to build it this high up?"
