Title: Harmonic Convergence
Fandom: Dragon Age (DAO, DAI)
Rating: Teen I guess
Wordcount: 13,604
Characters: Alistair, Fergus, Stroud, f!Hawke, Leliana, Fiona; past Alistair/f!Cousland
Spoilers: For the Grey Warden quest line in DAI and the Redeemer ending of DAO
Notes: This is a sequel to Face the Music, which is my "what might Redeemer ending Alistair be up to during the time of Inquisition?" story. Although I hadn't specifically planned to write a sequel at the time, the possibility was always in my mind; at some point, I started it, then set it aside; when I was setting my writing goals for 2021, I decided I would pick it back up as my entry for this year's [community profile] wipbigbang. And so here we are! [archiveofourown.org profile] purpleyin was my artist, and they created a lovely series of moodboards that I've embedded in the fic on AO3.

The other thing that helped me finish this story was a realization that I wasn't going to wrap up the entire series just yet. I was trying to cram in too much plot and character growth, and the beat that'd I'd planned as the midpoint was actually the end of this story and the jumping-off point for the next. So yes, this will be a trilogy. I haven't decided whether I'm going to forge straight ahead with part three or give myself a bit of a break (I can make arguments for either way).

Summary: Feeling the effects of the false Calling, Alistair leaves his home in Redcliffe (where he landed after Teagan rescued him from his lonely life in Kirkwall) to tell the Grey Wardens of the red lyrium he discovered in the Hinterlands. Instead, he discovers Stroud, who draws him into a much deeper web of conspiracy and drama. Along the way, he discovers some dark secrets about the Wardens -- and some surprising truths about himself.

Title: Heroes
Fandom: Dragon Age: Inquisition
Rating: All ages
Wordcount: 955
Characters: Dorian/m!Lavellan
Spoilers: Through the Arbor Wilds
Notes: Well, here we go. Turns out I'm pretty invested in this relationship -- who knew? Well, mostly I'm invested in Mahanon Lavellan, who is rapidly becoming one of my best beloved OCs. Anyway, this scene, following up on the events at the Temple of Mythal, hit me very hard as I was wrapping up yesterday's game, and I knew it wasn't going to get out of my head until I wrote it down.

Meanwhile, it's become increasingly obvious that I need some more DA:I icons. I don't even know where to find icons any more; suggestions?

The party who had ventured into the Temple of Mythal popped out of the eluvian one by one: first Morrigan, then Dorian, followed by Solas and Cassandra and -- after a wait that was most likely only a second or two but to Dorian felt like years -- the Inquisitor, Mahanon Lavellan. )

I didn't get anywhere near as much progress as I wanted on these, but I have worked on a few, and I think I will continue to do so. Maybe a project for by the end of the year. Anyway, I finished this one recently, and I'm pretty happy with it. Loral Mahariel's canon, a prelude to Witch Hunt.

Title: In Death, Sacrifice
Fandom: Dragon Age, Critical Role
Rating: Teenish (for peril and mild violence)
Wordcount: 10,170
Characters: Vax, Vex, Percy, Loral Mahariel, Scanlan, Keyleth, Kashaw, Nathaniel Howe, Kima, many others. No overt romantic relationships.
Spoilers: For Critical Role, Campaign One, Episode 44, "The Sunken Tomb" and implied for the Dalish elf origin.
Notes: This story was initially inspired by fanart of Vax in armor that resembled the Deathwalker's Ward-- except that it was emblazoned with the symbol of the Grey Wardens. Unfortunately I don't have a link, so I can't give the artist proper credit. I might have seen it on the "Search for Grog" pre-show reel. I started writing it in early March 2019, but it became clear early on that I was going to struggle with completing this story if I didn't have any structure. Soon after, the [community profile] wipbigbang challenge opened for business, and I decided joining up would provide that structure. In the end, I finished the story about a week before my posting date.

[personal profile] penaltywaltz was my artist! They made a banner and three variant wallpapers, all of which are excellent. You can see the artwork on AO3 or on Tumblr.

Summary: When his sister is overtaken by Blight poisoning, Vax'ildan bargains with the Raven Queen for her life. But is he ready to accept the terms of the deal?

Although I haven't posted much here recently, I did get two posts up at [community profile] ladybusiness already this month!

Mid-Year Reading Check-In, where I look at my progress on reading goals in 2019 so far (not too bad! Better in some areas than others), and share some favorite books.

My reviews of the Hugo finalist novelettes, to go with the novella reviews I posted last month. I plan to get started on the short stories soon, so look for my thoughts on those as well.

Meanwhile I've been busy with social obligations and work all month so far, to the point that I decided to pass on a couple of events I would have otherwise attended in favor of getting today off from pretty much all obligations (except for a trip to the grocery store), and it was definitely the right call. Next week is also shaping up to be busy, so it was good to fortify myself.

The last round of [community profile] ladiesbingo finished on Sunday, so I didn't quite complete the fill in time, but I got pretty close. My post with links to all five stories is here.

Complete card beneath the cut! )

I managed something I've never done with a bingo card before: a different fandom for every fill. (The next challenge: every fill with the same fandom.) I look forward to the next round coming in the fall!

Drabbling!

I was wrong about [community profile] multifandomdrabble -- author reveals were not anonymous, so everything is up today! I received SIX -- count 'em, six -- stories, all of which I truly enjoyed.

One Critical Role, two Agent Carter, three Dragon Age -- of which TWO are about Anora! )

I feel like a slacker in comparison for writing only one story, although it was a series of seven linked drabbles, so I suppose I did okay.

The Day 13 challenge is to set some goals, but I've already done that, so instead I'm backing up to Day 10: Create a fanwork. Possibly this is cheating, because I didn't write this today, nor on the actual Day 10 -- most of it was drafted over a week ago, and I've edited bits of it over the intervening days. But I polished it up yesterday, and got it posted, and editing and posting is an important phase of creating a fanwork, at least for me. So here it is!

Title: Constructive Solution

Notes: Written for [community profile] ladiesbingo, "Episode Tags and Missing Scenes" prompt. Starts in the final moments of All That Remains. I have now committed fic of this moment for every romance I've played. The Hawke is Sylvie, my purple mage; I haven't talked about her much here, although I'm sure I will once I finish her playthrough.

Title: The Choice
Fandom: The Adventure Zone: Balance

Wordcount: 14,994
Characters: Magnus/Julia, The Chalice, Lucretia
Spoilers: Yes, through The Eleventh Hour, Episode 8 (and hints at spoilers for later episodes, although nothing said outright)
Notes: If you know that two of my bulletproof favorite tropes are separation and reunion and warriors with a heart of gold, then it is no surprise to you that Magnus is my favorite TAZ character, that Magnus/Julia is my TAZ otp, and that this is the fic I've been itching to write since I first listened to the Balance arc, although it took a recent re-listen to get me motivated to actually start setting it down.

Summary: Magnus takes the Chalice.

Spoilers: Yes, for the series epilogue
Notes: Written for Round 6 of Ladies Bingo, to the prompt "Season of Mists", meaning autumn and related topics. Originally I meant to take the prompt a little more literally but it didn't work out that way. Although not at all spooky, I still thought it would be nice to post this one on Halloween.

Title: Stargazing
Fandom: The Adventure Zone: Balance
Rating: G-ish
Wordcount: 973
Characters: Magnus/Julia, Merle
Spoilers: Yes, significant, for the whole arc.
Notes: I've been re-listening to TAZ: Balance for the last couple of weeks. I don't remember why I picked it back up. I'm sure at least in part it's been comfort listening, but I'd also long wondered how well the whole thing hangs together with knowledge of the full plot (the answer: very well, although that's not particularly surprising). In the process, I was hit pretty hard by a fic idea, but this story is not that one. Instead, this is a bit of flash that I knocked out shortly after finishing the first time, essentially finished, but set aside for no particularly good reason that I can remember. So I polished it up a bit, then posted. Just a bit of melancholic Magnus/Julia fluff.

There's a lot of fandom cross-pollination between Critical Role and The Adventure Zone, which makes a lot of sense -- they're both story-focused Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, a family of nerds playing their beloved games and sharing them with an audience -- but despite my love for CR, I'd been a bit reluctant to dive in to TAZ. But then I learned that the current campaign would be wrapping up soon (I understand it's recently done so), and I decided to give it a shot. I'd been listening to it every now and again as I had time, but it didn't suck me in as completely as Critical Role did... and then I reached The Eleventh Hour, which is the fifth main story arc. I'd noticed the GM's storytelling and the players' character work improving over time, but everything took a serious level up in the previous arc (The Crystal Kingdom), and early in The Eleventh Hour everything solidified, pulling me into the story to the point that I'm now dying to know what happens next.

It used to be that I never wrote fic for a canon that I hadn't finished, but anyone who knows me and my relationship kinks (specifically, separation and reunion) will probably not be surprised that I was taken by the urge to write about one particular scene. Cut for spoilers. )

I'm sure this moment has been ficced a thousand times, but I learned my lesson about looking for fic when I'm behind on a canon from Dragon Age. ;) So for now I'll just present my own quick take on the scene; maybe once I've finished the Balance storyline I'll revisit it with the full knowledge of anything relevant that happens later. Note, I'm still early in the arc that follows Eleventh Hour (The Suffering Game; I've only listened to the first episode) so please no spoilers for anything later in comments.

Title: Inapproriate
Fandom: FFXII
Rating: Teen-ish
Wordcount: 7902
Characters: Ashe/Balthier, Ashe/Al-Cid, Penelo, Ondore
Spoilers: Yes but nothing really blatant.
Notes: A few months ago, I was complaining about not having any fic ideas, and [personal profile] renay pounced on me with a suggestion of Ashe/Balthier and fake dating. This is the result. Thanks to Nay for the bunny and to [personal profile] justira for a super-helpful beta read. Also thanks to Square Enix for releasing The Zodiac Age, thereby giving me the opportunity to put the characters' voices back in my head.

Summary: Beset by advisors who are pressuring her to marry, Queen Ashe reacts by bringing sky pirate Balthier as her escort to an important state event. Just having a bit of fun at her council's expense... right?
