Breathing

My view right now

I severely overestimated the amount of writing time I would have on this trip, but that's okay because I've spent it lounging and board gaming and hanging out with people, and reading a little, and if that means I fall further behind on my writing goals this year, in the long run I think that's okay. I've needed this getaway so much, and I'm so fortunate to have the opportunity to have one.

(Written on Saturday, didn't post until today. Now I am home. Tomorrow will tell if this trip was the reset I needed. I hope so.)

1. I was good and got my flu shot today. We rewarded ourselves with boba tea afterwards. I have only recently discovered boba tea, mostly because I realized I didn't have to have actual boba in it (or any other toppings). It's just a nice sweet milky tea beverage.

2. I'm almost caught up on Arrowverse -- pretty much only the season finales to go. Just in time, too, since Batwoman premieres on Sunday.

3. The downside of all this TV watching is that I'm barely reading right now. But I did go to a reading by Annalee Newitz last Saturday, where they read from The Future of Another Timeline and answered my question about their favorite weird fact learned from book research with the story of Sol Bloom, a politician who initially became famous for his role in the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. And this Saturday (tomorrow), I'll be seeing Marie Brennan with [personal profile] forestofglory. So it's not like I'm lacking in things to read once I'm done.

Although I haven't posted much here recently, I did get two posts up at [community profile] ladybusiness already this month!

Mid-Year Reading Check-In, where I look at my progress on reading goals in 2019 so far (not too bad! Better in some areas than others), and share some favorite books.

My reviews of the Hugo finalist novelettes, to go with the novella reviews I posted last month. I plan to get started on the short stories soon, so look for my thoughts on those as well.

Meanwhile I've been busy with social obligations and work all month so far, to the point that I decided to pass on a couple of events I would have otherwise attended in favor of getting today off from pretty much all obligations (except for a trip to the grocery store), and it was definitely the right call. Next week is also shaping up to be busy, so it was good to fortify myself.

Widows

The wind picked up and our local air is finally better, hooray! We also bought an upgraded air filter for the furnace, then let it run on the fan setting for several hours, and that seems to have helped. Still, I'm glad that it supposed to start raining soon (late Tuesday night in the current forecast).

In part to get into a cleaner air environment, and in part because I've been curious to see it, T and I went to see Widows. It was a really good movie, but it was a lot darker than I was expecting. This is not a light, fun heist caper -- it's a violent and thrilling crime film, with twists and turns and real scares and lots of awful, awful people, and you will probably walk out wanting to ban all men. But I'm still very glad I saw it. The acting is stellar, from an amazing ensemble. Definitely worth seeing in a theater, if you're at all interested.

One quick content warning: there is a very cute dog in the movie, and the dog is occasionally in danger. Not a significant spoiler but in case you need to know. )

So yesterday or the day before, T and I were out driving, and he made an offhand comment about how I hadn't been called in for jury duty for awhile. I should have made a sign to ward off evil or something, because guess what came in the mail today?

December 9th. Yay.

Meanwhile, tomorrow Bioware will lift the embargo on spoilers in reviews of Dragon Age: Inqusition, which I suppose is as good a time as any to make my Tumblr hiatus official. I've barely been over there since my Hawaii trip anyway, so it's more a formality than anything. By the way, have I mentioned how nice it is to see more Tumblr people following me here now, and more folks commenting? Definitely nice. :) Welcome aboard!

I also need to finish my signup for DA Holiday Cheer tonight. That'll be a good note on which to take a Tumblr break. (Is it wrong that I'm actually looking forward to this Tumblr break?)
