owlmoose: (tea - it's good for you)

In prepping to write this post, I realized that I never did this for 2020. Since I only published five stories in 2021, it seems like I might as well wrap the whole thing together here. So here goes.

In Conclusion

Watch this space, I guess, for my soon-to-come writing goals posts, where I try to make sense of all this and decide what comes next.

Title: Harmonic Convergence
Fandom: Dragon Age (DAO, DAI)
Rating: Teen I guess
Wordcount: 13,604
Characters: Alistair, Fergus, Stroud, f!Hawke, Leliana, Fiona; past Alistair/f!Cousland
Spoilers: For the Grey Warden quest line in DAI and the Redeemer ending of DAO
Notes: This is a sequel to Face the Music, which is my "what might Redeemer ending Alistair be up to during the time of Inquisition?" story. Although I hadn't specifically planned to write a sequel at the time, the possibility was always in my mind; at some point, I started it, then set it aside; when I was setting my writing goals for 2021, I decided I would pick it back up as my entry for this year's [community profile] wipbigbang. And so here we are! [archiveofourown.org profile] purpleyin was my artist, and they created a lovely series of moodboards that I've embedded in the fic on AO3.

The other thing that helped me finish this story was a realization that I wasn't going to wrap up the entire series just yet. I was trying to cram in too much plot and character growth, and the beat that'd I'd planned as the midpoint was actually the end of this story and the jumping-off point for the next. So yes, this will be a trilogy. I haven't decided whether I'm going to forge straight ahead with part three or give myself a bit of a break (I can make arguments for either way).

Summary: Feeling the effects of the false Calling, Alistair leaves his home in Redcliffe (where he landed after Teagan rescued him from his lonely life in Kirkwall) to tell the Grey Wardens of the red lyrium he discovered in the Hinterlands. Instead, he discovers Stroud, who draws him into a much deeper web of conspiracy and drama. Along the way, he discovers some dark secrets about the Wardens -- and some surprising truths about himself.

Title: Heroes
Fandom: Dragon Age: Inquisition
Rating: All ages
Wordcount: 955
Characters: Dorian/m!Lavellan
Spoilers: Through the Arbor Wilds
Notes: Well, here we go. Turns out I'm pretty invested in this relationship -- who knew? Well, mostly I'm invested in Mahanon Lavellan, who is rapidly becoming one of my best beloved OCs. Anyway, this scene, following up on the events at the Temple of Mythal, hit me very hard as I was wrapping up yesterday's game, and I knew it wasn't going to get out of my head until I wrote it down.

Meanwhile, it's become increasingly obvious that I need some more DA:I icons. I don't even know where to find icons any more; suggestions?

Also on AO3

The party who had ventured into the Temple of Mythal popped out of the eluvian one by one: first Morrigan, then Dorian, followed by Solas and Cassandra and -- after a wait that was most likely only a second or two but to Dorian felt like years -- the Inquisitor, Mahanon Lavellan. )
owlmoose: (da - aeducan)

I wanted to give this a little more visibility than where it's currently hiding in my November writing goals post: two lists of prompts for codex entries about Dragon Age OCs. One; Two. The first is more generic; the second includes DA:I specific content.

This strikes me as something fun and light to work on this month. I probably won't post them all individually, but here's the first:

Title: Leadership
Fandom: Persona 5
Rating: General audiences
Wordcount: 386
Characters: Makoto/Joker
Spoilers: Nothing overt
Notes: Although inspired by playing Persona 5 Royal, nothing in this is specific to P5R canon. Set right after starting the Makoto romance. We might romance someone else in this playthrough, but I have come to realize that Makoto is my forever favorite. Also inspired by the [community profile] monthlysupergo mini-bingo prompt Truth.

owlmoose: A bright blue butterfly (butterfly)

In comparison to previous years, this is going to be pretty sad, but for completeness sake.

In Conclusion

I am seriously thinking about taking a hiatus from fic in 2020 and focusing on non-fiction writing instead. Not that I won't write fic if inspired, and I'll probably sign up for at least a couple of exchanges, and I need to consider whether officially back-burnering "Wardens of Ivalice" is a good idea or a terrible idea. I want writing fanfiction to be fun, not a chore, and it increasingly felt like a chore this year. What that looks like, I haven't figured out yet. Conversation on this topic is more than welcome.

owlmoose: (critical role - vex)
Title: In Death, Sacrifice
Fandom: Dragon Age, Critical Role
Rating: Teenish (for peril and mild violence)
Wordcount: 10,170
Characters: Vax, Vex, Percy, Loral Mahariel, Scanlan, Keyleth, Kashaw, Nathaniel Howe, Kima, many others. No overt romantic relationships.
Spoilers: For Critical Role, Campaign One, Episode 44, "The Sunken Tomb" and implied for the Dalish elf origin.
Notes: This story was initially inspired by fanart of Vax in armor that resembled the Deathwalker's Ward-- except that it was emblazoned with the symbol of the Grey Wardens. Unfortunately I don't have a link, so I can't give the artist proper credit. I might have seen it on the "Search for Grog" pre-show reel. I started writing it in early March 2019, but it became clear early on that I was going to struggle with completing this story if I didn't have any structure. Soon after, the [community profile] wipbigbang challenge opened for business, and I decided joining up would provide that structure. In the end, I finished the story about a week before my posting date.

[personal profile] penaltywaltz was my artist! They made a banner and three variant wallpapers, all of which are excellent. You can see the artwork on AO3 or on Tumblr.

Summary: When his sister is overtaken by Blight poisoning, Vax'ildan bargains with the Raven Queen for her life. But is he ready to accept the terms of the deal?

The last round of [community profile] ladiesbingo finished on Sunday, so I didn't quite complete the fill in time, but I got pretty close. My post with links to all five stories is here.

Complete card beneath the cut! )

I managed something I've never done with a bingo card before: a different fandom for every fill. (The next challenge: every fill with the same fandom.) I look forward to the next round coming in the fall!

Drabbling!

owlmoose: (B5 - Ivanova)
I was wrong about [community profile] multifandomdrabble -- author reveals were not anonymous, so everything is up today! I received SIX -- count 'em, six -- stories, all of which I truly enjoyed.

One Critical Role, two Agent Carter, three Dragon Age -- of which TWO are about Anora! )

I feel like a slacker in comparison for writing only one story, although it was a series of seven linked drabbles, so I suppose I did okay.

Title: Deferred Maintenance
Fandom: Babylon 5
Rating: Gen
Wordcount: 700
Characters: Lennier, Vir, Zack Allen, Lyta Alexander, Susan Ivanova. Shades of Zack/Lyta.
Spoilers: Through mid season 3 (specifically the episodes "Shattered Dreams" and "Sic Transit Vir")
Notes: Written for Sys, to the prompt "Stuck in an elevator".

Title: Beached
Fandom: Kingdom Hearts (with canon from Birth by Sleep 0.2 and KHII)
Rating: G
Wordcount: 1525
Characters: Aqua, Rikku, Yuna, Paine
Spoilers: For Birth by Sleep, particularly BBS 0.2
Notes: Written for the current round of [community profile] ladiesbingo, to the prompt Elves, Fairies, Pixies and Brownies. I had various ideas on this one, then remembered that fairies are canon in the KH universe and came up with this bit of idea.

Title: Mind Tricks
Fandom: The Adventure Zone: Amnesty
Rating: General
Wordcount: 604
Characters: Dani/Aubrey
Spoilers: Allusions to spoilers but nothing overt. Set right after Episode 20 (the second "lunar" interlude)
Notes: Written for the current round of [community profile] ladiesbingo, to the prompt Telepathy. Connection to prompt is pretty loose.

Also on AO3.

The Day 13 challenge is to set some goals, but I've already done that, so instead I'm backing up to Day 10: Create a fanwork. Possibly this is cheating, because I didn't write this today, nor on the actual Day 10 -- most of it was drafted over a week ago, and I've edited bits of it over the intervening days. But I polished it up yesterday, and got it posted, and editing and posting is an important phase of creating a fanwork, at least for me. So here it is!

Title: Constructive Solution
Fandom: Dragon Age
Rating: Teen
Wordcount: 660
Characters: Isabela/f!Hawke
Spoilers: Yes, through All that Remains
Notes: Written for [community profile] ladiesbingo, "Episode Tags and Missing Scenes" prompt. Starts in the final moments of All That Remains. I have now committed fic of this moment for every romance I've played. The Hawke is Sylvie, my purple mage; I haven't talked about her much here, although I'm sure I will once I finish her playthrough.

This was a light year for many reasons, but I wrote some stuff I was pretty happy with; maybe that makes up for it.

In Conclusion

There's a number of themes I could pull out here, but the one that jumps out at me is just how little I was inspired to write on my own. Except for "The Choice", every single story on here was in response to a prompt from an exchange or a bingo card. When the idea for "The Choice" did come along, I was off to the races, writing like the wind. I'm not sure what this "means" in the big picture, but it's something I need to think about. For one thing, it's probably no accident that I'm writing less fic as I am less involved in the media fandom community -- I've all but quit Tumblr, the new services like Discord and Pillowfort don't entice me to join in, and I haven't really found or participated in Dreamwidth communities to replace them. Chatting meta and seeing other people's thoughts has always been a great source of inspiration for me, and I need to get back to that, somehow. Thoughts for the writing goals post still to come...

Title: The Choice
Fandom: The Adventure Zone: Balance
Rating: T (for a few brief scenes of violence and fade-to-black sex)
Wordcount: 14,994
Characters: Magnus/Julia, The Chalice, Lucretia
Spoilers: Yes, through The Eleventh Hour, Episode 8 (and hints at spoilers for later episodes, although nothing said outright)
Notes: If you know that two of my bulletproof favorite tropes are separation and reunion and warriors with a heart of gold, then it is no surprise to you that Magnus is my favorite TAZ character, that Magnus/Julia is my TAZ otp, and that this is the fic I've been itching to write since I first listened to the Balance arc, although it took a recent re-listen to get me motivated to actually start setting it down.

Summary: Magnus takes the Chalice.

Title: Mellow Fruitfulness
Fandom: Critical Role
Rating: G
Wordcount:1217
Characters: Pike, Vex, background Percy/Vex and Pike/Scanlan
Spoilers: Yes, for the series epilogue
Notes: Written for Round 6 of Ladies Bingo, to the prompt "Season of Mists", meaning autumn and related topics. Originally I meant to take the prompt a little more literally but it didn't work out that way. Although not at all spooky, I still thought it would be nice to post this one on Halloween.

Title: Stargazing
Fandom: The Adventure Zone: Balance
Rating: G-ish
Wordcount: 973
Characters: Magnus/Julia, Merle
Spoilers: Yes, significant, for the whole arc.
Notes: I've been re-listening to TAZ: Balance for the last couple of weeks. I don't remember why I picked it back up. I'm sure at least in part it's been comfort listening, but I'd also long wondered how well the whole thing hangs together with knowledge of the full plot (the answer: very well, although that's not particularly surprising). In the process, I was hit pretty hard by a fic idea, but this story is not that one. Instead, this is a bit of flash that I knocked out shortly after finishing the first time, essentially finished, but set aside for no particularly good reason that I can remember. So I polished it up a bit, then posted. Just a bit of melancholic Magnus/Julia fluff.

Title: Undercover
Fandom: Critical Role
Rating: PGish
Wordcount: 2,936
Characters: Beau/Yasha
Spoilers: Minor for character backstories
Notes: Written for [community profile] trope_bingo, combining the prompts "sharing a bed" and "fake dating". Mentions backstory details brought up in Episode 9, set sometime vaguely after current canon (most recent as of this posting is Ep 22).

Summary: Beau and Yasha go on a mission to gather some intel, but there's only one room left at the inn.

Characters: Joker/Makoto
Spoilers: Major, MAJOR spoilers through the events of 11/21 (the aftermath of the 6th palace). (As of this writing, I'm not much beyond that myself, so please no spoilers beyond this point in comments. Thank you!)
Notes: A scene that came to me almost entire after we stopped playing the game last night. The theme will probably surprise no one who knows me.
