Fic in Review: 2020 and 2021

In prepping to write this post, I realized that I never did this for 2020. Since I only published five stories in 2021, it seems like I might as well wrap the whole thing together here. So here goes.

Master List of Fic Written

By canon, then order of publication.

Critical Role

  • Partners -- Percy/Vex, Campaign 2 cast, post-canon, hurt-comfort kinda
  • Overboard -- Campaign 2 cast, set vaguely during the first arc at sea (after Caduceus joins the crew, before the big Nott reveal).
  • The Next Adventure -- Jester/Fjord and Caleb/Essek, set post canon.

Dragon Age

  • Camping Out -- Sereda Aeducan/Alistair, 5 times fic
  • Shiny -- Dagna & Shale, drabble, set during DAI canon
  • Staff Training -- Krem, Bull/Dorian UST
  • Heroes -- m!Lavellan/Dorian, set right after the Arbor Wilds
  • Maybe -- m!Lavellan/Dorian, spoilers for Jaws of Hakkan
  • Harmonic Convergence -- Alistair during the events of Inquisition, sequel to "Face the Music".

Persona 5

  • Leadership -- Joker/Makoto, shortly after the beginning of their relationship, no spoilers for main canon

Questions and Answers

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January? Dorian/m!Lavellan for sure. I had no idea I would fall so head over heels for that Inquisitor, and I'm so glad I did.

What's your own favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest? "Harmonic Convergence", even if it ended up only being half the story I thought it would be.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them? No, and I think that's a problem.

Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year? I'll write up my goals for 2022 tomorrow.

From my past year of writing, what was...

My best story of this year: I suppose "Harmonic Convergence", even though again it's not exactly the story I thought it would be. But I'm glad I recognized that the end point was coming long before I expected it.

My most popular story of this year: In terms of hits, "Heroes" by a lot; in kudos it just edges out "The Next Adventure. For 2020, the most hits went to "Leadership", but "Staff Training" got the most kudos by far.

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: None, actually -- I think they all got about the right amount of attention for their quality and appeal to fandom at large.

Most fun story to write: One that's not on this list -- a collection of Dragon Age codex entries that I plan to work more on this year. Hopefully they will see the light of day before next January.

Story with the single sexiest moment: No sexy times in either year, really, despite having found a couple of new pairings, which is interesting.

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: I think writing about m!Lavellan helped me get to know him even better.

Hardest story to write: "Harmonic Convergence*, which was by far the most ambitious.

Biggest Disappointment: Not finishing my Cassandra/m!Lavellan/Dorian fic, which I was very excited about for awhile but then just lost steam. Getting back to this is on my todo list for the year.

Biggest Surprise: Not writing more DA even as I was enjoying being immersed in the game story again. As mentioned above, I wrote more words on something that is yet unpublished than I did on any of my finished work. I need to figure out how best to get those stories out there.

Most Unintentionally Telling Story: The unpublished fic mentioned above. Threesomes solve gated romances, yes they do.

In Conclusion

Watch this space, I guess, for my soon-to-come writing goals posts, where I try to make sense of all this and decide what comes next.

lassarina: Alistair, from Dragon Age, with quirky eyebrow (Alistair O RLY)
