originality

I knew I was going to come up against this eventually in AGL -- writing scenes that we see in the game. Part of me would like to do as little of this as possible, partly because it just doesn't feel all that creative but mostly because it's all been done. How many people have re-imagined the game in novel format? Tons. I've even read some of them. This part that I'm coming up to isn't so bad, because I haven't seen so many fics that write out the Jecht Spheres (although I've been purposefully avoiding Braska's pilgrimage fics lately because I don't want them to color the way I tell my own story), but when I get to Yuna's pilgrimage (and I do intend to cover at least parts of it) it's going to be difficult to put my own spin on it, to avoid doing something that's already been done a thousand times.

One of the things I've liked about this story is that it's somewhat different. Lots of people have tackled the Auron backstory, but I haven't seen anyone take quite my approach. Most of the others I've seen give Auron a difficult life -- temple orphan, abused child, some sort of awful childhood. In contrast, my Auron's youth was quite ordinary, even happy. In some ways, I think this makes his story even more tragic, because he has almost everything a man could want out of life: home, a family, friends, the love of a good woman, a successful career. And then to lose it all to betrayal compounded by bad decisions... Well. Now, it could be that there are zillions of stories out there that follow this basic template, and if so I stand corrected (and if they're any good, I'd love to read them!), but I don't think there are. But I do worry that it will devolve into "just another pilgrimage fic" once I start writing these bits.

The other problem is that I don't have an FFX save anywhere near any of the Jecht Spheres. So I'll have to rely on scripts, which is risky in terms of dialog accuracy, and none of them have much detail on the action, especially not key bits like facial expressions. So maybe I'll have to start making stuff up after all...
