saw a 3d design student at school sawing up books to make a book holder -- it seemed brutal, and he had to figure out a way to make it stronger, since it wasn't structural enough with all the pages flapping around. If you had to glue, I'd use the kind of glue they use in construction to glue walls and things together which you can get at DIY places -- wouldn't know the english translation, though.
A dutch designer did a small bookshelf in that vein, see here (http://www.dutchbydesign.com/content/products/detail.cfm?Category=In%20the%20Media&Product=Selfshelf&CatID=26&ProdID=349). Although that is a real piece of wood, you could always take a cool cover, get a piece of wood and glue the cover on, and you'd have the same thing they are selling for $40. Ha!
