I think I want one. We almost have enough ancient books here to do it, too. If only I had a place to put it.

What if someone stumbles into the structure? Do you think it would collapse? As I mentioned, I have forty-five boxes of books in the attic. I could furnish the entire house with this technique. LOL

They're tied together somehow -- they described the process at the bottom of the page, but my brain is too fuzzy this morning to really understand it -- so I assume it is structurally sound. Somehow they managed to do that without damaging the books, which is a cool thing.

That's a lot of books. Have you read them all? :)

Yes, I read that but it was not clear just how. LOL

Yes, they were the ones which did not make it back on shelves when I moved back into my rebuilt house. When the builders finished they had not replaced the over-the-window shelves so there was less space available. I have been too lazy to have them restored. One of these days ...

I want to see someone make a bookshelf out of old books.. you might have to dump them in a hardener of some sort though.

That would *rule*. I want that even more!

If you start collecting books, we can work on it next time I am in SF :)

From my reading of the site it was pure gravity holding everything together, except for the top board. If you can do a book bar with that technique, you could really do anything. Coffee table, side board, nightstand, dining room table...

saw a 3d design student at school sawing up books to make a book holder -- it seemed brutal, and he had to figure out a way to make it stronger, since it wasn't structural enough with all the pages flapping around. If you had to glue, I'd use the kind of glue they use in construction to glue walls and things together which you can get at DIY places -- wouldn't know the english translation, though.

A dutch designer did a small bookshelf in that vein, see here (http://www.dutchbydesign.com/content/products/detail.cfm?Category=In%20the%20Media&Product=Selfshelf&CatID=26&ProdID=349). Although that is a real piece of wood, you could always take a cool cover, get a piece of wood and glue the cover on, and you'd have the same thing they are selling for $40. Ha!
