more on fic remixing

So discussion of metaficcing and remixing has spread throughout LJ fandom, and one of the more interesting effects has been the creation of a remix community: [livejournal.com profile] remixy_things. Its founder, [livejournal.com profile] amidalashari, describes her reasons for going this route here.

It's an intriguing idea, for sure, and I'm thinking about joining, although given that I'm only really in one fandom I would be more interested in an FF-centric remix community or project. (Anyone up for something like that?) It does raise my eyebrows a bit, though, that she says she rejected the Creative Commons license as a solution because we don't "own" the rights to the fic we write. I disagree with this sentiment, pretty strongly. The legality of fanfic has never been tested; it's a gray area of copyright law, not a bright line. But even if I don't own the characters or the world of Spira in a legal sense, I do feel that I have some ownership of the stories I created that use that world and those characters. Okay, the CC license might not stand up in court, but that's not really the point.

Still, anything that gets this concept spread further in fandom is good by me. And seriously, anyone wants to do something like this in Final Fantasy, let me know.

None of my fandoms were on the (so far meager) list of fandoms other people in the com are involved in either and the way the community has been stagnated at four members since I joined early this morning, I have a feeling there might not be any more. :/ But I approve of the concept and even if I never find anyone there whose stories I want to fic, and no one there ever ends up ficcing any of my stories, to me it's still worthwhile to be a member as a statement if nothing else. The community stands for something I just came out pretty firmly in support of and ignoring it when it was Sitting Right There seemed rather, well, hypocritical. LOL!

Anyway, we'll see what happens to it. And whether or not the actual membership ever goes anywhere, I'm still listed there and I'll update my fandom list as I write stories in new fandoms (which I've been doing lately, here and there) and anyone who wanders by is free to fic me; you don't have to be a community member to make use of the info and permissions given there.

Hah! Good point. ;) I will continue to ponder. Probably when I get home from work I will join. Even if I never "use" the community I do think it would be good to show support for it.

You know, I would love to get in on that project.

>.>;

If we enforced tagging of all entries, it wouldn't be that difficult to maintain. It would be all about start-up and getting the basics down, and then pimping it out.

So, you know, if you're interested...

So of course I propose a huge project right when I don't have any time to actually do any work for it. ;)

But, um, I might not be able to resist. Do you have a vision? How do you think it would work?

I was thinking about this earlier; I have stories in my portfolio that end somewhat abruptly. There's one called Cfaadraynd, which has this gigantic time jump between the last chapter and the epilogue. I was thinking that authors could put their fics up there, like "Man, anyone want to fill in this time gap?"

Or recommendations. "I'm reading this fic, and I was really wondering where Rikku was this whole time."

That could be one way of going about it, and could spark lots of discussion in comments. It would also be a sort of recommendation community.

Also, on the logistic side of things, if we had everyone tag entries as they post with the particular FF, the main characters of the fic, whether it's a meta request or a meta complete, etc. (maybe some other stuff would have to be in there), we'd have a very usable index. The only thing would be that mods would have to police entries for proper tags (but that's easy enough).

Also, much like the comm you linked above, people could put their permission out there for their stuff to be metaed, as in they could link to specific stories that they think would be conducive to meta.

Ohhh the fun.

So you're thinking it would be a request community from both sides? And people would post "I'd love someone to meta this fic I wrote" as well as "I read this fic and it would be great to see some meta on it" requests. That could work.

And then it could also serve as a directory, where people list themselves as being open to others metaing their fic in general. Unless that's asking one community to serve too many purposes? Hmm.

That tag limit thing is annoying, I had no idea.

It could just be an all-around meta community. If it gets out of hand, another community can be opened, but it's nice to have it all in one place. I think too often people get caught up with compartmentalizing, but it's frustrating to have to look in five different places. If we can organize it well, it will be no problem.

There should be tags, at least in the beginning, "author requests" (requests to meta from the author) versus "reader requests" (requests from a reader).

[identity profile] bottle-of-shine.livejournal.com 2007-06-12 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Am I allowed to say, "Hey, tags are great and all, but they only allow 100 entries per tag?" Because this is really frustrating to me in fandom, actually! Communities and writing journals will utilize the tags but go over 100 entries in each tag, rendering them pretty much useless for older entries.

Something to consider, anyway. >>

No kidding? I didn't know that!

We could overcome it by having "FFX" "FFX.2" "FFX.3" once we go over 100 tags. Or something like that.

If only we could petition LJ to increase the tag limit.

I agree with Ry; I think it could be done without too much trouble--and, of course, I wouldn't mind getting involved, either.

Because I really am such a sucker for a good meta/collaboration

[identity profile] owlmoose.livejournal.com 2007-06-12 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool. See my comment to Ry, above. Any ideas about specifics?
