Tagging: tasty!

For all that I embrace technology and am a big fan of the Internet, it can take me awhile to start up with a new tool. Case in point: del.icio.us. I've known about it for ages, thought about messing with it, but it took [livejournal.com profile] bottle_of_shine enthusing at me about it to get me to finally try it out.

So today, in fits and starts throughout the day, I went through all my browser bookmarks and tagged the ones that still worked, and now I have them all nice and organized. The whole process went so fast -- almost two hundred links, and I classified them in a matter of hours. Almost ridiculously easy. It had gotten to the point that I was reluctant to add bookmarks because I was afraid I'd never find them again. No more. And of course having them classified and cross-referenced appeals to the librarian within.

It's a great tool. Definitely recommended. Now I'm tempted to go through all my LJ entries and tag them in del.icio.us. But that's another project for another day.

In what manner is this a great improvement over the Safari bookmarks? I have all mine organized into folders and have no trouble finding the one I want. I am curious about this system mainly because it stores the items on line and I had to totally recreate all my bookmarks when I moved from a PC to the iMac.

I find the interface easier to search than the bookmark folders. I also like that pages can be listed under more than one tag. And, yes, the portability is quite helpful. Although I'm surprised that Safari didn't have some function to import your bookmarks from IE or Firefox or whatever you were using on the PC -- Firefox has that functionality, as does Camino (which is my primary browser on the Mac). There are also some sharing features that are useful -- you can look at pages your friends have tagged, or be notified whenever someone tags a page with a particular subject. And even with all that, I feel like I'm just scratching the surface with it.

Of course, I'm the one who went back and tagged every LJ entry I'd ever written when they introduced the feature, so I may not be typical. ;)

Heh! You are a librarian, as you said. I cannot even remember to tag my LJ as I go.

I may give this system a test drive. I had fun looking over your bookmarks. So far, I have relied upon the lack of portability between browsers as a way to prune my bookmark list which has a way of growing out of control every year or so. Windows was notorious - to me - for hiding the list so that when I tried out a new browser, I always had to start over. ;)
