earthquake!
A pretty significant one, down east of San Jose. A long one, too, long enough for us to think about whether we needed to find cover. Mostly we heard it; something was rattling, I think maybe the doors to the water heater closet.

Well, no. But I never had time to get beyond "mildly concerned" before it became clear that the quake was over and no local damage had resulted. This was one of the longest earthquakes I've ever felt, and it probably lasted about 6-8 seconds. That's the thing about earthquakes (and why I prefer them to tornadoes, which I grew up with and remember vividly): they happen, and then it's over. There's no warning, no build-up, no running down to the basement to wait. I'd also take earthquakes over hurricanes or wildfires (now those are scary, and can also happen here, although not as commonly as in Southern CA).
