TELL ME ABOUT X.

Or I guess FF9.

Also go do the poll on my LJ. *demands*

I should point out that I mean MY X. Not FFX. Mwa ha.

If I could barely manage to do this for Harry Potter, a series which I have reread several times but never been in the fandom for, there's no way I can do X justice. Let's just say I like Sorashi and Kamui/Yuzuhira and don't feel strongly enough about any other ships either way to have much opinions. ;)

So. FF9!

One True Pairing Ship: Quina/food Beatrix/Steiner. The whole concept just amuses me so much: kickass Beatrix and clueless but loyal Steiner. It just suits the generally light-hearted tone of the game.

Canon Ship: Garnet/Zidane. It's not often that I actively ship the main pairing in an FF game (although I don't usually hate it either) but this is the exception.

"If this happens I'll stab my eyes out with a spork" Ship: I actually can't think of a pairing I hate in this game. Maybe Zidane/Kuja.

"You are one sick bastard" Ship: Eiko/Vivi. They are both made of adorable, especially Vivi, but they are both way too young for all of this and Vivi has other things high on his mind, and yet in a way I think they'd be really cute together.

"I dabble a little" Ship: Freya/Fratley. Their history is of the kind that tends to intrigue me, even if I'm not sure they could really have a future.

"It's like a car crash" Ship: Quina/anyone. Scary, but the thought it still entertaining.

"Tickles my fancy but not sold just yet" Ship: Freya/Amarant. I have seen some fascinating fic in this area, but I continue to not be quite convinced.

"Makes no canon sense but why the Hell not" Ship: Freya/Zidane. A kind of "comrades-in-arms become more" pairing. It could happen, right?

"Everyone else loves it but I just don't feel it" Ship: I don't have a good enough sense of what's popular in this fandom, except for Zidane/Garnet of course, which I like. Maybe we could put Zidane/Kuja here too.

"When all is said and done" Ship: This is one of my favorite fandoms for genfic, actually. So none of my shipping preferences are all that strong.

Kamui/Yuzu probably should exist more than it does. Once of those mysteries. *g*

Garnet/Zidane. It's not often that I actively ship the main pairing in an FF game (although I don't usually hate it either) but this is the exception.

Oh, hell yes. That was the one time it really just clicked and worked. I love them both.

But: You forgot Quina/Vivi. Or did you forget their marriage?

[identity profile] owlmoose.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
No, see. Quina/food is the OTP. And I'm much too fond of Vivi to want Quina to have to eat him...

[identity profile] first-seventhe.livejournal.com 2008-07-23 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I would put X, but I'm afraid that's too obvious, so I choose FFXII.

[identity profile] owlmoose.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
One True Pairing Ship: Balthier/Ashe. I know, totally predictable. But their dynamic just slays me.

Canon Ship: Does FFXII even *have* any canon ships? Plenty of subtext, all over the place, but the only canon ship I can think of is Ashe/Rasler.

"If this happens I'll stab my eyes out with a spork" Ship: Larsa/Vayne, ugh. Drastic age difference, prepubescent kid, *and* incest. Way to hit all my squicks at the same time, fandom.

"You are one sick bastard" Ship: Larsa/Penelo, in game. He's still too young, but they are so completely adorable together.

"I dabble a little" Ship: Larsa/Penelo, aged up. See, this I can get behind.

"It's like a car crash" Ship: Ashe/Vaan. I was terrified the game was going to go this way, I was relieved when they didn't. And yet, there might be some car-crash-watching appeal in the idea of seeing them try (and probably fail) to make it work.

"Tickles my fancy but not sold just yet" Ship: Ashe/Vossler. Their relationship seems mostly to be professional, princess and bodyguard, but there's something about it...

"Makes no canon sense but why the Hell not" Ship: Balthier/Vaan. Although I'm not so sure I'd say that it makes no canon sense. They can go buckle swashes together! It'd be a riot!

"Everyone else loves it but I just don't feel it" Ship: Fran/Balthier. They are very much a friends-partners dynamic to me, not lovers at all. Although I suspect Balthier has at least thought about it... I actually feel somewhat the same way about Balthier/Basch.

"When all is said and done" Ship: They have a lot of things pulling them apart -- her duties, his need to not have duties, all kinds of other problems, but my heart really roots for Balthier and Ashe to make things work, and I'm not even sure why.

I love you for everything you just said here. ♥ I'm amused at how your pairings line almost perfectly with mine.

[identity profile] owlmoose.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Hee, cool. I've noticed that our 'shipping preferences often tend to line up, actually; maybe it's because we like the same sorts of female characters and gravitate toward het pairings?

Probably very true! XD

[identity profile] first-seventhe.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 12:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree in regards to Ashe/Vaan. I was afraid the game was going to take that farther than it did (in my defense, I pull up every game from VII - X), and I was pretty relieved when it didn't happen. I think a lot of it came from my severe dislike of Vaan. I'm not going to hate on him like so much of fandom does, but his character didn't do much for me (maybe because he's surrounded by other, more dynamic characters) and the thought of him winning the princess was a little stomach-turning.

Besides, then what would Penelo do? besides go marry larsa

[identity profile] owlmoose.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Penelo clearly has plenty of options. :) my personal fanon is that she is a little sweet on both of them

I don't think Ashe and Vaan have particularly compatible personalities, but I mostly didn't want the game to put them together because it would be so very predictable (see: your comment re. every game from VII-X), and it was nice to see them break that particular pattern.

FFX-2, because as has been stated, X is too obvious /smartass.

One True Pairing Ship: Paine/Nooj, natch.

Canon Ship: P/N is canon, dammit, and no one is telling me otherwise

"If this happens I'll stab my eyes out with a spork" Ship: I used to be more tolerant of Nooj/LeBlanc but I've actually gotten less sympathetic to the idea over the years. Mostly because I don't see any evidence that he's into her really.

"You are one sick bastard" Ship: Nooj/Yuna. Noojyin, rather. Shuyin using Nooj to reunite with Lenne in the form of Yuna? All kinds of nice dark possibilities there.

"I dabble a little" Ship: Baralai/Yuna. Actually this is probably my favorite pairing outside of P/N.

"It's like a car crash" Ship: Paine/Rikku. I can't see it as anything more than a fling, at all, but what a fling it would be!

"Tickles my fancy but not sold just yet" Ship: Baralai/Gippal. (And the mass unfriending exodus begins!) There are things I like about this pairing, but the way they get written together often makes me want to pull out that spork. Uke-ified Baralai makes baby Jesus cry.

"Makes no canon sense but why the Hell not" Ship: Paine/Buddy. I don't know why I keep writing this, but I do. He's the solid, stable one that's left when everything shakes out? Maybe. Anyway, I continue to keep them on the back burner.

"Everyone else loves it but I just don't feel it" Ship: Rikku/Gippal. Not that I don't see the canon evidence -- it's there, for sure, and I think they *can* be a good couple. But they so rarely *are*. If ever a fandom ruined a pairing for me, this was it.

"When all is said and done" Ship: P/N P/N P/N. Every time I think I ought to branch out, they just draw me back. I may never be finished with them.

[identity profile] wildejoy.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"Uke-ified Baralai makes baby Jesus cry." I completely agree. Every time I write Baralai I freak out, because I'm so worried I'm - well, in your words, 'uke-fying' him. It's difficult.

I didn't know you read Baralai/Yuna! Do you have any fics to recommend? I like the idea but so far I've only found one that I thought was done well.

[identity profile] owlmoose.livejournal.com 2008-07-26 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
It's not a pairing that gets written much, sadly. Probably "Of Sun" by [livejournal.com profile] parron and "Cfaadraynd" (which is actually a Baralai/Yuna/Gippal triangle) by [livejournal.com profile] iamleaper are the ones I've liked the best. I've only been able to write drabbles myself, although I'd like to take a crack at it for real someday.

'Ware spoilers, anyone else reading this!

One True Pairing Ship: Hmm I don't know that I really have one. Although...

Canon Ship: Zuko/Mai. Oyez. I love both characters, and they have such a fabulous relationship. I liked them before "The Boiling Rock", but that episode pretty much cemented my love for them forever.

"If this happens I'll stab my eyes out with a spork" Ship: Sokka/Toph. Not that I don't love their dynamic, I do, but it's not one that I think could really stand up to a romance. Even if she was a little sweet on him for a while there.

"You are one sick bastard" Ship: Toph/Iroh. I mean, yes, he could be old enough to be her grandfather, so on that level it's squicky, but their conversation was one of the high points of the series. Maybe I "ship" them as having a close personal bond?

"I dabble a little" Ship: Zuko/Katara. Just enough of the right kind of interaction in canon to make me see them as an interesting possibility, not enough for me to tip over into full-blown shipping.

"It's like a car crash" Ship: Azula/Ty Lee. An awesome, giddy, snarky, fiery, leapy car crash.

"Tickles my fancy but not sold just yet" Ship: Sokka/his harem. Sokka is awesome, mind you, but does he *really* need to pick up a new chick everywhere he goes? I do like him with Suki, though.

"Makes no canon sense but why the Hell not" Ship: Aang/Ty Lee. I don't know, something about this just really appeals to me, for all that they never really interacted in canon. I think they'd have a lot of fun.

"Everyone else loves it but I just don't feel it" Ship: Aang/Katara. I freely admit that this comes down to the age issue for me, even if Aang isn't exactly your average 12-year-old. I do buy that he's in love with her; I'm just not sure that she'd return his feelings just yet. In five years, sure.

"When all is said and done" Ship: The gAang and their friends, kicking back in the tea shop, enjoying the world they've created. Maybe not a ship exactly, but I find it profoundly satisfying.

Harry Potter? :)

[identity profile] owlmoose.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
One True Pairing Ship: I like Ron/Hermione. What can I say? I like them together, and I saw it coming from pretty far back (at least book 3). Doesn't everyone like being right? ;)

Canon Ship: See above.

"If this happens I'll stab my eyes out with a spork" Ship: I wouldn't go quite as far as that, but I was really hoping that Harry/Hermione would not be canon. It just seemed too obvious -- main guy gets most significant female character as his girlfriend -- and I always felt their dynamic was more brother/sister anyway.

"You are one sick bastard" Ship: Hmm, I'm not sure I really have a 'ship that fits this definition. The only ones I can think of are the teacher/student combinations and I don't really like any of them.

"I dabble a little" Ship: Remus/Sirius. Of all the popular slash pairings in HP, this is the one I like the best and see the most potential for interesting stories in. I've always thought that, if I were to write HP fic, it'd be the Mauraders I'd be interested in, and this is the 'ship in that group I find the most interesting.

"It's like a car crash" Ship: Snape/pretty much anyone. He's so difficult and socially inept, watching him try to interact with almost anyone has that sort of car-crash dynamic.

"Tickles my fancy but not sold just yet" Ship: Luna/Harry. I really don't know about the dynamic in some ways; in others it could be totally adorable.

"Makes no canon sense but why the Hell not" Ship: Ginny/Neville. It doesn't work because of timing, by the time it might have happened Ginny is already with Harry, but isn't the idea of them having a thing while leading the resistance appealing?

"Everyone else loves it but I just don't feel it" Ship: Harry/Draco. I don't tend to be into the rival 'shipping in any case, and Harry's dynamic with Draco doesn't strike me as being particularly well suited for it anyway. They don't have enough underlying respect for each other.

"When all is said and done" Ship: OBHWF. Because in the end, that's what makes Harry happy, and being happy is what I always wanted for him.
