Tidbits for the day
"If the real world were a book, it would never find a publisher. Overlong, detailed to the point of distraction--and ultimately, without a major resolution."
--Hamlet in Something Rotten, Jasper Fforde
Things are quiet here. Made brunch, watched some news, did some housework, wrote a little.
It's no surprise that this rather stunning news got lost in the shuffle this week, but I wanted to mention it anyway: the California State Senate is now the first legislative body to pass a bill legalizing same-sex marriage without being required to do so by the courts. It's highly unlikely to pass the Assembly, the Governator has suggested that he wouldn't sign it anyway (despite claiming to support the issue in the past), and there's concern about fallout regarding the upcoming propositions, but still. I take a little smug pride in the fact that the bill was written by my Assemblyman.

Re: I
Parts of CA are as Republican and repressed as any red state (my in-laws are in San Diego County, and ugh), but fortunately enough of the population is in the blue urban areas that we can get things right much of the time.

Re: I
Has same-sex marriage been a huge issue in Australia like it is here? Do you know how all this is playing down there?

(Anonymous) 2005-09-04 11:27 am (UTC)(link)I'm listening to the news in the background right now, and it's most depressing. It'll take at least 80 days for all of the water to be pumped out of New Orleans :(
PS- love the user pic :)
Re: I
Also thanks for the word from Australia... I've seen lots of criticisms of John Howard for just that reason. Good to know that you don't encounter a lot of anti-Americanism down there, although sometimes these days it would be hard to blame them...
The whole New Orleans situation is so terrible. At least the people who've been trapped there seem to finally be getting help.
