Tidbits for the day

"If the real world were a book, it would never find a publisher. Overlong, detailed to the point of distraction--and ultimately, without a major resolution."
--Hamlet in Something Rotten, Jasper Fforde

Things are quiet here. Made brunch, watched some news, did some housework, wrote a little.

It's no surprise that this rather stunning news got lost in the shuffle this week, but I wanted to mention it anyway: the California State Senate is now the first legislative body to pass a bill legalizing same-sex marriage without being required to do so by the courts. It's highly unlikely to pass the Assembly, the Governator has suggested that he wouldn't sign it anyway (despite claiming to support the issue in the past), and there's concern about fallout regarding the upcoming propositions, but still. I take a little smug pride in the fact that the bill was written by my Assemblyman.

That's wonderful news. I've got a particular interest because (and she's not the only relative) my Aunt Lisa and her longtime partner Leannah live in Riverside, CA. Leannah actually works in Barbara Boxer's office. It's a pity more people can't get their heads in order.

I have gay aunts in CA, too. :) That's part of the reason I care so strongly about this issue, although of course it's more than just that. They've been together for almost 30 years with a daughter in college, and they actually got married in San Francisco last year; pity the courts didn't let those marriages stand.

Has same-sex marriage been a huge issue in Australia like it is here? Do you know how all this is playing down there?

I don't think it's been as highly publicized here, but the position of the people in power is pretty much the same. John Howard and George Bush are cut from the same mold- Howard pretty much does whatever Bush tells him to. I haven't yet met a single person here who actually likes Bush, though thankfully they recognize the difference between anti-Bush and anti-American.

I'm listening to the news in the background right now, and it's most depressing. It'll take at least 80 days for all of the water to be pumped out of New Orleans :(

PS- love the user pic :)

Thanks! Like most of my FF userpics, it's by The RyRy.

Also thanks for the word from Australia... I've seen lots of criticisms of John Howard for just that reason. Good to know that you don't encounter a lot of anti-Americanism down there, although sometimes these days it would be hard to blame them...

The whole New Orleans situation is so terrible. At least the people who've been trapped there seem to finally be getting help.
