Computer headache

I turned on my work computer today and discovered that an "upgrade" to Firefox had wiped out all my bookmarks, settings, and plug-ins. It was as if it had been reinstalled from scratch. Anyone else experience this, or am I uniquely blessed with having to start over again?

Fortunately, I keep most of my bookmarks on Delicious, but the ones I use most are in my toolbar for "easy access". Not so easy if I have to keep re-doing them all the time... Boo.

I've never experienced it before, but I can think of a few ways to fix it.

Simplest solution: Check your Firefox settings folder. Should be something like C:\Documents and Settings\[your username]\Local Settings\Application Data [which is a hidden folder]\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles. You should see a folder that has a string of 8 characters and then ".default" as its name. If there's more than one of these, that's probably the problem and I can give you more details on how to fix that.

Other than that, I am not sure what's up. But I've never had Firefox do that to me before and I've been using it since v. 0.8.

I followed that path, and there's only one .default folder in there. Interesting, though, that its most recent update date is last Friday. I wonder if I have two installations of Firefox on this machine? Because, another weird thing, when I woke up my computer this morning, Firefox automatically launched, and it doesn't usually do that.

....how fascinating. It sounds like that might indeed be what you've got going on. However, I'm not quite sure how to fix that. I am afraid my tech-geek usefulness is at an end :(

Yep, that's what it was -- somehow Firefox got installed on my machine twice, and the second one got launched this morning. I quit the program, then reopened by clicking through folders on the C: Drive to get to the .exe file, and it opened with all the expected settings/bookmarks/cookies/etc. Who knows why. PCs confuse me.

I have not been so unfortunate... yet.
