the beauty of no

Every proposition on the CA statewide ballot failed yesterday. Every. single. one. All those little red Ns. So satisfying. I could look at them all day.

So much for the Governator and his proclamations about the will of the people. The people have spoken, and they said no.

I thought of you last night as I watched the early returns from California. Congratulations to all you good people. Is there still a hard-on for amending the Constitution so Ahrnuld can run for President? LOL

amending the Constitution so Ahrnuld can run for President?

Funny, you don't hear nearly as much about that these days. ;)

I don't remember the last time I was so please by the outcome of an election. There are a few exceptions, but the Republicans are sporting bloody noses all over the place. If only there was some other party to capitalize on their failure...

Meanwhile, the clock creeps inexorably backwards in Texas and Kansas.

*grumbles*

Yeah, those results were not so pretty. But not terribly surprising, either.

That's an excellent icon. I also keep meaning to compliment you on the godless liberal one, unless I already have.

Yes, but did you read about Pennsylvania?

Hopefully Texas and Kansas voters will take the hint.

I saw that. Most excellent. Now we don't have to call in a certain someone to smite them all...

I was listening to the BBC this morning and they were talking avout how the democratic candidates had won the NJ and VA governor's races and the NYC mayor's race... they corrected themselves a little later in the broadcast.

That said- I voted for a Republican! eek!
but the best man for the job, which is realy the point in the end.

Bad liberal! No biscuit! ;) Although given the BBC mistake, I wonder if he actually counts.

So you like Bloomberg then?

[identity profile] anzubird.livejournal.com 2005-11-09 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I do like Bloomberg. I like the fact that the only political position he aspires to is mayor of NY, and that he is doing it because he really wants to do what is best for the city, not what is best for him. I may not agree with everything he does, but it's nice to know that it is really not about politics.

He's definitely not a Republican, but given the ridiculousness to Democratic politics in NY, it was the only way he could get on the ballot, so that's what he did.

Interesting. I didn't know that. I had just assumed he was that rare beast: a moderate Republican, like Guliani.

No, I think he was a registered Democrat until the day he decided to run for office. The problem in NY is that there are far too many Democrats who have been in city office forever, so there is no way for someone new to make any sort of inroads as a democrat, thus...

Of course his financial background does also give him a lot of credibility as a republican.

Oh, I'm so glad the Ahnold honeymoon is officially over. If only there had never been one in the first place!

I just remember reading all the quotes from people around recall time who were like, "I'm a Democrat, but I want Arnold because he's gonna clean up this state, man! He's the Terminator!" And I was like, oh you silly people. Don't you know he's going to be just like all the others?

[identity profile] owlmoose.livejournal.com 2005-11-09 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't you know he's going to be just like all the others?

The sad thing is that, for a little while, he actually wasn't. I was really angry about the recall, particularly at the Schwarzenegger Democrats. But for the first, oh, maybe six months, he really looked like he was going to be something different. I even got cautiously optimistic.

Then he started running for re-election (which, by the way, he originally said he wasn't going to do), which meant turning hard right to appeal to the Republican base. And in our legislature, we have Democrats who aren't afraid to strike back. (Congress could learn a thing to two from these guys.) Now his political capital is worthless. I think his approval ratings are a little better than W's, but not much. He is ripe for toppling. If only the Dems had someone exciting to run against him.

Maybe they are. Of course it's easy for them to be confident in such a blue state. I often have the emotional) feeling that if only the national Dems would be brave and tell it like it was, everybody would rally to them - sort of the "Howard Dean approach". But logically I fear it's just not true, unless you get someone really charismatic.

Warren Beatty? ;)

I think that people are so upset with Bush and so hungry for real leadership that this might well work. Even if we didn't get someone super charismatic to lead the way. The problem is finding some Democrats with the guts to do it. They've gotten so used to cringing. But no one ever responded to the "please don't hurt us" school of leadership.

Warren Beatty?

No more actors.

Over here there has been little news of the Governator's work -- saw a report yesterday and was horrified by it all -- so surreal. yay democracy!!!!

[identity profile] owlmoose.livejournal.com 2005-11-09 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
yay democracy!!!!

When it works, it is a beautiful thing indeed. :)

[identity profile] i-iambe.livejournal.com 2005-11-09 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
The will of the people was that Arnold not waste our money (that could be used for, oh, I don't know, something completely unnecessary like schools or hospitals) on a special election just to satisfy his ego.

Still pissed about the wasted money, though.

[identity profile] owlmoose.livejournal.com 2005-11-09 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I hear you on that one. All that money, just to float a bunch of propositions that were ultimately defeated? When CA doesn't have any money in the first place? It definitely angries up the blood. That's why I'm so glad they all failed. It really puts Ahnold in his place.
