FogCon 10: Day 1
Mar. 7th, 2020 11:46 amIs it really the tenth FogCon? I don't know whether it's harder to believe that, or to remember that there was ever a time when FogCon wasn't a part of my life.
Yesterday was good! I got to the con just in time for the first panel slot; I attended "Food in Genre Fiction", which ended up being just as much about the roles food plays in real-world human culture as in fiction. Next I went to a reading featuring Marie Brennan, who read from her forthcoming fantasy trilogy Rook and Rose, which she is co-writing with Alyc Helms under the name M.A. Carrick. The other two readers were Dave Smeds, who shared part of a short story in the anthology Lace and Blade 4 -- in which Brennan also has a story; I may have to check it out -- and Garret Crocker, who read a story that he freely admitted was Star Trek fic with the serial numbers filed off; he tried to leave it at a cliffhanger a couple of times, but between audience outcry and having some extra time after Q&A, he read the whole thing. It was a fun story, and I'm glad he was able to share all of it.
After that I grabbed a quick dinner with
forestofglory (we basically pal-ed around all day). Next was a brief opening ceremony, where a land acknowledgement was read and the guests of honor (present and absent) were introduced. Following that in the same room was another panel on the assumptions we make while world building; like the food panel, it didn't stay entirely grounded in the realm of SFF, but it was a fascinating discussion on how different cultures construct concepts of identity and community.
There was one more panel slot, but I decided instead to drop by
zahraa and
zyxwvut's annual room party; I only stayed for about an hour, but I had a good time, talking generations and politics. After that, it was time to hermit up; I stayed up entirely too late finishing this week's Critical Role, then woke up entirely too early this morning for no good reason. But just as well -- it gave me time to have a leisurely breakfast and then type up this entry. It's a con; I can sleep later. :)
