Did you have pets when you were born or when you were very young? Did you play with them? Did they look after you in any way? If you have kids and pets now, what is the dynamic?

My mom didn't like pets so it took me until I was 14 to talk her into a dog. Keep in mind my folks had 8 children to feed. We found a German shepherd and we put an ad in the paper. No one came for him. So my dad said, we now have a dog. My dad loved him too. Mom of course hated him. Both my dad and the dog. 😂😂 For whatever reason, he loved my mom.

His name was Shep. My dad named him. We all played with him. He was so happy. He went everywhere with me. He was the best dog. I have kids but not at home. They grew up with dogs. We've had some good ones through the years.

I have a 14 1/2 year old labrdoodle named Dakota. She is a mama’s dog. I can't go anywhere in the house alone. She was abused and latched on to me. She was six months when we got her. I just love her.

If you've been looking for a pet, this is your week. Your local pet store will probably have local rescues eager to talk to you. If you have a pet, your local pet store may have special deals going on.

What are you working on? What have you finished? What do you need encouragement on?

Are there any cool events or challenges happening that you want to hype?

What do you just want to talk about?

What have you been watching or reading?

Chores and other not-fun things count!

I miss not being able to breathe like a normal person. I miss being able to sleep without being attached to my oxygen. I'm whiney tonight. I'm grateful that they found out what was wrong with me. I think I'm tired tonight.

This is a prayer for Baba Yaga. This is a prayer for Resistance.

This is a prayer for the magic of chicken feet, the heat of old hates, the way old bones hurt. This is a prayer for Resistance.

This is a prayer for hat knitters, sign-carriers, Congress-callers. Old women make up the Resistance.

This is a prayer for casserole-bakers, newsletter-writers, nuisances. Old women make up the Resistance.

This is a prayer for phone-bankers, neighborhood-canvassers, early-voters. Old women make up the Resistance.

When the Moon is full, I call to Her.

I bring coals for Her oven. I bring flour, to cover Her tracks. I bring paprika salve for Her old, sore joints.

I bring a list of complicit women. I bring a doll poked with pins and bound with vines. I bring a bottle of ancient anger.

“Come, Baba Yaga,” I say. “Come find me alone in the woods.”

She comes as she always comes: after a long, scary wait.

She comes as she always comes: riding a mortar, a mop handle, a big, black bird.

She comes as she always comes: hungry, grumpy, alone.

“Old One,” I cry, “We are deep in the darkness. We stand on the front lines, but we are afraid.”
Old One,” I say, “We are tired, our legs get shaky, our fingers are sore.”

“Old One,” I whisper, “It seems to us as if we have worked all our lives and only gone backwards.”

“Oh, shut up,” Baba Yaga says, grabbing all the cookies and putting them into her bag. “Give me those for my cat,” She demands, pointing to liver mousse, sausages, cheese.

She pulls down the skin below my eyes. “Not enough yogurt,” She decides.

“Oh,” She says, turning her chicken hut around and going way past the speed limit, “You’ll be fine. I saw it in some tea leaves. This all works out in the end.”

“Build you a fence made of bones,” She says. “Write this on your wrist: ‘By my mother’s blessing.’”

This is a prayer to Baba Yaga. This is a prayer for Resistance.

This is a prayer for women in sneakers. This is a prayer for Resistance.

This is a prayer for one more phone call. This is a prayer for Resistance.

1. Feeling relatively positive about some work stuff regarding the new system. I talked about it with my supervisor today, and hopefully we can get a decision by the time I get back from vacation. (Basically it's the IT department insisting things have to be a certain way that is really not realistic, and after my meeting with the people from the Guam branch, I want to see if we can do what they're doing.)

2. The weather has been surprisingly nice this week after all that awful heat the week before. Much muggier than I'd prefer, but at least it's cooler.

3. I got gas today and was pleasantly surprised to find that the price had not gone up since Monday when I filled up the other car. The last few times I'd been before, it was like 10-20 cents higher each time. D:

4. Ollie was very patiently waiting for lap time.

Just shy of two weeks ago, I caught an episode of the YouTube Channel/Podcast "The Rest is Science: Cognitive Ghosts," about weird perceptional things like de ja vous, and the uncanny sensation that there's someone in the room with you. In the very last chapter of the video, They talk about the almost universal experience of people in the process of dying having dreams of loved ones who've died before them.

And they mentioned the hypothesis that it could be the brain's way of distracting the dying person from the physical pain of their body shutting down. Which is lovely to think that your last thoughts in life will be of love. But I also think, that as a uniquely, intensely cultural species, passing on our values and knowledge and life lessons is just as, if not more, important than passing on our genetic material. So our brains go into overdrive, with all the fervor of a salmon swimming upstream -- reminding us of all the most important knowledge we've learned (love each other, forgive each other), so we can pass pass that knowledge on to those who will live after us.

I wanted to get a selfie of Jan, Hazel and me when we went for a short walk before paint and sip. It was cold out. We walked from the Venango Campus gazebo to the memorial for Suzette Nellis beside the Allegheny river. By an odd chance I see she was killed exactly 3 years ago today.

Friends. I was not that excited to do a pig for our paint and sip picture so I added a spider and made it into Wilbur from Charlotte's Web. I made the pig a bit more hairy than Chloe's original pig. I never have liked the look of baldness and pinkness that pigs are usually portrayed with. I think it's particularly disgusting to see a picture of a fat pink pig standing on his hind feet in an apron and chef's hat offering up a plate of pork chops (the cut up bodies of his relatives) in front of a restaurant.

Skye had been doing pretty well for so long (eating, not throwing up, wobbly walking here and there, resting a lot) I almost started to believe that that stage could go on forever but yesterday she started to fail. Didn't want to eat. Barely moved from her bed. Today she can't get up at all. I'm glad that Hazel got to see her before she passed on. She was Hazel's pet in the very beginning when she lived over at Jules' house. In a way I can almost believe she held on so long because she wanted to see Hazel one last time. Or the universe wanted them to see each other one last time anyway. Hazel spent a lot of time loving her up today.

*****
It's over now. As I was finishing up writing the above Skye left us.

I'm going to be out of town for the next couple Fridays, so I won't have a reading post for a while, but I will be reading and posting about everything once I get back.

Recently Finished
Everyone in This Bank Is a Thief
Brand new Ernest Cunningham book. I am still greatly enjoying this series.

Cocaine Blues
First in the Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries series. I've never seen the show, but am vaguely aware of it and did not realize it was based on books, but this popped up in my recommendations and I do like historical murder mysteries with female protagonists. I didn't love this one, though? It was okay, and I'll probably read more eventually, but I'm not rushing out to read the rest right this moment.

The Tokyo Zodiac Murders
This was an interesting one. The plot sounded intriguing, but so much of the first half or so of the book is just these two guys talking about this 40-year-old unsolved case and coming up with theories, and it was kind of boring. Once it finally got going I enjoyed it more. There are a bunch of books in the series but it looks like only one other is translated into English and I'm not so invested that I want to pay money for the Japanese ones.

This American Ex-Wife
Memoir about the author's divorce (from a truly terrible guy) and how getting divorced was freeing for her. I really liked this a lot.

Lu and Ren’s Guide to Geozoology
Cute middle grade graphic novel about a girl who goes off in search of her missing geozoologist grandmother so they can view an upcoming eclipse together. It's set in a fantasy world and a big focus is on the various animals of the world. I liked this a lot.

Bokura no Chikyuu no Arukikata vol. 7
Final volume. I really loved this series.

Shadow House vol. 21

I made it through this work week unscathed! I logged off last night at 4:45 and took a 2 hour nap where I slept like a rock, got up, watched The Pitt (more on that below) and went to bed and again slept hard. This weekend could not have come at a better time! ;)

In other news, I am sure you have all see this, but in case you haven't: Himesh Patel joins the Ryan Coogler X-Files Reboot. Danielle Deadwyler was already on board. I am seated and ready! Though it will probably be several years before it premieres (if it doesn't get shitcanned the way the Buffy revival did).

My impression - not based on anything except how it's described in that article - is that this is more of a sequel than a reboot? Like a reopening of the X-Files several years later? But I could be wrong. It could be a straight up reboot. I am curious, though, how it will go, especially after we've had Fringe and, more recently, Evil treading similar ground.

As for The Pitt: spoilers )

And now I am just going to hit post while I still have an internet connection. The router has been worse today than ever before. I guess it knows its replacement is sitting five feet away, ready to be installed tomorrow.

Connecting with LL Cool J over the last week has been amazing. It has been honest, pure, revitalizing and hopeful. She has whisked off nearly all the cobwebs that had amassed. She filled some voids that needed filling. Her timing was perfect. She filled me with light when i was in a dark place. We share a long, complicated past history and I am ecstatic to be reminded how good it is to be alive. I am now, as I have always been, forever in debt to this beautiful soul.

Baseball season! Huzzah! Day one brings a Mariners loss and a Mets win. I am stoked for a good season from both. Remember, the mantra will always be F#ck The Yankees and the Dodgers can suck a fat one.

I made a crab salad today so friggin' good is should added to the list of Man's Greatest Achievements. Dayum!

i've spent the last day slowly figuring out the scope of what i want in this next project with gamedev....

see, it's always been a dream of mine to recreate tellius as a walkable 3D world. i like that world and characters, and think it'd be Neat. it's safe to say after twenty years i doubt i'll get bored with it anytime soon, so the low-level consistent drive is certinally there. but actually taking a stab at this does several additional things:

* forces me to learn blender beyond 'pick a video to do one small thing, flail a bit with copying it, and giving up out of boredom'.  3D modeling is one of the last frontiers creatively that i had been intimidated by, and this would create a consistent positive cycle with lots of mini-goals to tinker with, while not having to come up with ideas from scratch.

* obviously this wouldn't be sell-able in any way given the IP, but giving the game files to tellius old heads to have fun with would be cute. :)

* lowkey honest to god great reference for future tellius doujinshi/drawings.....

anyway -

finding PoR/RD's high res textures was an incredible boon because the bottleneck of most games is the sheer amount of assets needed, even if you're an artist. i like painting textures, but i was not looking forward to having to recreate .... everything.... this also lets me put in placeholders with fairly little effort as well as seamlessly matching the world i'd want to recreate.

i'm actually considering using blockbench again for the initial wave of modeling because i had about a month or two genuinely having fun with it creating basic low poly work and painting my own textures to the point i made a walk cycle for one character and a basic environment with fairly little difficulty (this was right before gunter ate my brain in 2023 or so). perhaps working in that program there briefly could stretch those muscles again before attempting blender...

* in terms of NPC and general graphic complexity, i'd be happy with a majora's mask equivalent. this isn't no 'recreate elden ring/skyrim' scope creep. majora's mask felt dense and lived in, but "basic" enough with polygons and gameplay it won't eat my computer alive lol.

of course, since this kind of thing invites dreaming, the pie in the sky ideas my brain was running wild with last night:

* what if a wyvern delivery service mini game that unlocks fast travel. creating crude weather systems (so a wyvern flight isn't a boring direct line between A and B) where there's a chance of lightning bolts to OHKO a wyvern, or a tornado like gust to likewise OHKO a pegasus (nodding to their weakness of lightning/wind reciprocally.)

* in terms of "filling up" the towns with characters we know, i was wondering if there'd be a cool system where there'd be a % chance makalov could be at any tavern in begnion, volke could have a lower % at any one in the continent in general.

* what if bright eyes gets a whole special combat system where you're encouraged to take damage to regenerate/counterattack. friendly to newcomers but also has a weird skill learning curve. (this is also making me think how cool would it be to incorporate my ashera's tower survival horror game idea.)

FINAL CONCERNS

So the soldiers did these things, but standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. (John 19:24b-27)

It seems to me that, during His hours on the cross, Jesus was wrapping up His final concerns, one after another. And one of them was for His mother—who had followed Him to Jerusalem for Passover, and who very likely had no one in her family to depend on after Jesus’ death—“For not even His brothers believed in Him” (John 7:5).

But Jesus can see His disciple John standing right there—and he, too, will need comfort and support from someone else who loves Jesus as he does. So Jesus gives them to each other.

He does the same for us in His church today, doesn’t He? Because even though Jesus has suffered, died, and risen again to give us new, everlasting life, we still have a broken world to live in—and without the visible, tangible presence of our dear Lord. So He gives us each other. And through the love of our fellow believers, we see Jesus reflected—and the Holy Spirit keeps us going, until the day Jesus returns to take us home with Him.

WE PRAY: Thank You, Lord, for the help and comfort You’ve given me through Your people. Make me a source of care for others as well. Amen.
