- Of course now I want some kind of Brokeback/On Swift Horses crossover. Maybe like mid-60s, Jack runs into happily partnered Henry and Julius and they listen to his woes and fuck him.

- On related note, sure wish On Swift Horses would get onto streaming! Like for free with subscription, not just VOD like it is now.

- Some highlights from the very serious Oasis discussion forum:
Liam looked especially handsome in the video for 'Don't Go Away'. Elegantly wasted.

Why does it matter [what Noel looks like]? Being pretty is Liam's job.

- The Dead Meat Podcast is covering the entire Saw series, movie by movie. I am so excited. First episode of Hot Saw Summer is here. I have already rewatched Saw II in preparation for the next episode, which comes out tomorrow.

- I am eyeing the Terrible Temperature Troubles flash exchange, although I really shouldn't, because I still need to beat my Hurt/Comfort Ex bus pass into shape, and I have to Summer of Horror treats to work on. Meanwhile I'm also tempted by Battleship, which I said I'd never do again...

Planet Terror (2007). A very silly, pulpy exploitation movie starring a bunch of recognizable people fighting a zombie apocalypse. This is very much the thing that it is. Gross, inappropriate humor, a child shoots himself in the head. Rose McGowan is really hot, but the whole thing is soured by her RL history with Weinstein, who produced. Tarantino cast himself as a would-be rapist in his buddy's film. There's a lot of ehhhhhhh here, is way I'm saying.

I didn't hate watching it, but nor do I need to watch it again.

--

Brokeback Mountain (2005). Two cowboys herd sheep on a mountainside and start a decades-long affair. I got to see this at the theater for the 20-year anniversary, yay. It was pretty good! Heath Ledger was fantastic as Ennis, and the scenery was gorgeous.

That said, I had a lot of quibbles. Truthfully, realistic drama is not my genre even when you make it gay, so feel free to chalk most of my complaints up to that if you want.

That said, there were two key transition points that felt really abrupt and underdeveloped (the first time they have sex, and the reunion after four years apart). I also feel like either Gyllenhaal didn't get enough to work with, or he did not do a great job at working with what he had. It felt like the whole movie Ledger was showing and Gyllenhaal was telling. Ultimately, though, I think my main problem with this movie is I just about never vibe with the "decades of vignettes" drama subgenre. It always feels like the story is spread too thin, and it does here, too.

I do see the criticism about this being too much about tragic gays or whatever. There's no such thing as the universal queer experience, and no one work can capture What It Means To Be Queer, but even so this feels like a particularly narrow and bleak perspective.

Overall probably won't become one of my favorites, but I'm glad I've finally seen it.

So, Chapter 3 isn't over. We reset the days since last trip to emergency room/emergency vet last night with Christine. I am very glad we got her there and that the intervenous anti-nausea, antibiotics, and fluids has her looking much better. I swear she was looking a little yellow around the eyes last night and she looks much better now. The long painful wait in the emergency room was no fun, and i feel it was just in time when she got seen. Her blood pressure was falling.

Not going into all the details as they belong to Christine, but sharing what i feel is part of my details.

She has since had many tests, and news before 8 am that they would admit her. I was there mid morning through after lunch, advocating for her regular meds and reading/researching the test results when we got them. No doctor showed. Since she still tests positive for COVID she's under COVID precautions and will be for ten days -- but please let her be home well before that. Her sister is there now and i go back tonight with CPAP and other supplies.  [Yay, a doctor's consult, with me included by phone. They think just the infection but given how bad things were last night want to make sure she is well recovered with more fluids and more antibiotics.]

In Monday's therapy i discussed basically being kinda flat lined, kinda breaking into tears all the time.  -- -- This was before Christine really took a bad turn. Sunday evening she wasn't well and it was a bad night. Monday morning i drove her to  an appointment to see a nurse practitioner for the doctor she trusts, gotten antibiotics and were hoping that we were on a course to solve the immediate issues and a plan to address some other longer running issues - that i hadn't known about. -- -- I finally acknowledged i need to recover from All This.

Since 24 February -- four months ago -- we've been to the emergency room/vet  -- six times now.  I mean,  since Jan 20 it hasn't been easy. And between February 24 and April 18, 53 days, nothing dramatic inside our home happened (oh, but the US and administration's injustices, including the attacks on transpersons and the resounding political silence). Most of that time i was recovering from the platelet drop, and was just feeling better and stronger on April 12. So really the intense time has been from April 18 to now: five emergencies (two resulting in our loss of Luigi and Edward) in less than ten weeks. Plus B--'s death, convalescence for Carrie.

I have grown to believe that if you have an stressful work time of x weeks or months, it takes about 2x weeks to recover.

20 weeks from today is November 11. Maybe Chapter 4 begins then.

Hey, do you want more Deltarune rambling?

[ Yes ♥ Yes ]

MORE DELTARUNE RAMBLING IT IS. I wish I could write fanfiction, but, when I try to think of a concept, I just find myself feverishly analysing this game.

In today's entry, I try to pin down everything I can establish about Kris so far! I thought for a long time that silent protagonists just didn't interest me, but I am fascinated by Kris.

There are spoilers here for all of Deltarune so far, including the Snowgrave route. Some things have probably slipped my mind, and I haven't beaten the game's optional bosses, so I may be missing some details we learn there.

What do we know about Kris? )

Also, here's a little follow-up thought on my 'Kris has a crush on Noelle' theory, i.e. more transparent Kris/Noelle shipping disguised as serious analysis. Not really spoilery, but does discuss an optional conversation in chapter three of Deltarune.

Who are you bringing to the festival? )

Am I biased and/or overthinking? Almost certainly. But I still feel a lot is clicking into place now that I'm viewing Deltarune through this lens.

Local radio station triple J is doing a Hottest 100 of Australian Songs, and I thought it would be fun to make a playlist of Australian songs, in roughly descending order of how much I like them, and then compile my ten votes from there. My actual vote included less white dudes/took into account what was already in the system etc. And I am sure if I made this list on a different day it'd have been different songs!

Here's so thoughts about things I've been reading and watching recently:

The Gate, the Girl, and the Dragon by Grace Lin— Read out loud to the kid. I loved Grace Lin’s other MG books so I was very excited for this! It was very charming. As always I enjoy the author’s illustrations. I enjoyed having Chinese mythical creatures in a modern city. I don’t love it quite as much as some of the author’s other work, but it was good and worth reading.

The Transitive Properties of Cheese by Ann Leblanc— I heard about this novella from a WisCon panel on recent trans SFF. It's about a space cheese maker who finds out the asteroid that houses her cheese cave is about to be yeetted into the sun. She is one of many people who is a copy of an original human, including the person she sells her cheese to and the woman she goes to for help. This book was maybe not as weird as it was presented to me, and some of the politics are exactly like current earth queer community debates. Still I loved all the details about food, and the bits of community building that were present around the edges of the story.

The Truth Season 3 cases 6 and 7— This is labeled as two cases but it's really one very long case! I was a little disappointed to have to wait a week for resolution. This case also featured some upsetting queer phobic violence as part of one character’s backstory. But there were a lot of fun things too. They fought zombies with bubble guns!

The Treasured Voice Season 6 ep 1 — I started watching this while I was waiting between episodes of The Truth. It’s a singing reality show featuring people pairing up to sing songs. It’s got Liu Yuning! I’ve only seen the first episode but it seems pretty chill so far though there are some judges who make negative comments.

Team Nether: so many treasures

The main gameplay phase of [tumblr.com profile] mcytblraufest Battleship is over. Team Nether! *raises fist in triumph* We finished third (out of five teams), and we fully cleared all three boards, before work reveals even. I had such a great time on my team, with our two strider mascots Dirk Slow and Aragorn Steady. Massive props to the mods, everything ran very smoothly. In the first board every field had very cool flavor text even, and the bosses were very cool (we defeated the Wither Storm!)

I ended up with ten (!!!) gifts!
And I'm proud to say that despite that I reached my semi-serious goal of creating more gifts than I received. Though if I get more treats after this I'll give up. I've never received so many comments on one day as I did yesterday, it was great.

My wonderful gifts:
Sharp teeth and spring rain, Hermitcraft SMP
3.4k, Mumbo & Etho, fantasy AU, platonic kink
Summary: That anticipation, now cooled, mingled with fresh dread as the blank, flat space on the horizon tore open.
A thousand-year old dragon emerged from the void and blocked out the sun with his wings.
Mumbo gulped.
“Oh, Gem!” he fretted. “You expect me to dom that?”
Why I love it: Excellent premise, very cool worldbuilding, great character voices and development of their relationship.

Careful People, Hermitcraft SMP
1.3k, Cleo/Etho, cyberpunk AU post-divorce
Summary: "We'll be careful," says Etho.
"We're not careful people," Cleo reminds him.
"Maybe we know better now!"
Why I love it: I love the banter. Them. So divorced and yet.

seven more shorter ones and one piece of art under the cut because this got long )

The three weeks of the event were very intense. Multifandom Battleship starts soon and I don't think I'll sign up for it even though I had a great time last year, but that'd be a bit too much. Unless...

And now, off to read more from the collections! All Ages and 18 Plus, almost 1.200 works in total already, and there are still almost two weeks of the anon period.

Last night, when I was about to go to bed, I had a sudden revelation about Deltarune: Kris has a crush on Noelle.

No, hear me out, I swear I'm not just being an overinvested shipper. I mean, I am being an overinvested shipper, but I still think I have grounds for believing this!

There are minor spoilers for chapter four of Deltarune below the cut.

The case for Kris having a crush on Noelle. )

I'd love to write more Deltarune fanfiction, but it's tricky when there are so many unanswered mysteries! My main area of interest is Kris and their dynamics with other characters, but I feel I understand Kris less with every chapter that comes out. How can I write about them when I know so little about what's going on in their head?

I suppose that's why I'm doing so much rambling theorising. I can't write fanfiction, and these words have to go somewhere!

I've finished chapter four of Deltarune, meaning I've played all the Deltarune that exists so far! Time for another rambling post about this game.

This post talks about the normal route at first, then goes on to discuss the Snowgrave route. I'll mark when the Snowgrave spoilers are coming up, so you can duck out if you're trying to avoid those!

Thoughts on chapter four of Deltarune. )

I'm so invested in Deltarune. What a game. Undertale was mostly just a fun diversion for me, but Deltarune is a game I'm absolutely passionate about. I look forward to future chapters with both anticipation and fear.

The fear is at least in part that I won't be able to beat the bosses. There were a couple in chapter four that I really struggled with!

horror movies and things

Masters of Horror: Cigarette Burns. In John Carpenter's episode of the horror anthology series, a guy (Norman Reedus) who finds rare movie prints is hired to find one that may no longer exist after horrific violence broke out on the night it was shown. I love stories about haunted media, and the haunted media parts of this were solid. Unlike Antrum: The Deadliest Movie Ever Made, this mostly resisted the temptation of actually showing us the cursed movie, but the effects as our guy gets closer to finding it are satisfyingly disturbing. It even gets pretty gory towards the end, which I was not expecting.

That said, it's weirdly paced and very talky, and the main character should have been played by someone older, because Norman Reedus with his baby face absolutely cannot sell this role. Also, IMO it really mishandled the reveal spoilers )

--

Sator (2021). A man lives in a cabin in the woods while trying to discover what happened to his mother, who may have been taken by a demon that she and her mother both claimed to hear messages from. This movie doesn't have much dialogue, is very poorly lit, and relies heavily on the viewer being able to recognize and distinguish faces to distinguish what's happening, which I'm pretty bad at, so overall I understood only the broadest strokes of this movie. I think I would really like the movie that I think it was trying to be, a story of an inherited gift/curse and how it affects and has affected different members of the family, but I need a bit more than this movie could give me.

In particular,
spoilery questions )

I will say the spooky woodsy vibes were very good, and despite being objectively pretty slow, I was engaged the whole time. Also, the actress playing the grandma with dementia was fantastic. Loved her.

Overall I don't recommend this one, but if you watch it, I would love to know what you think happens in it.

Thursday morning

Tested negative yesterday afternoon; Christine strongly positive. Fingers crossed. Do i have a sore throat this morning, i wonder. (Every morning i go through latching onto some symptom to identify myself as coming down with COVID.)

Sick of masking. I am sitting outside (6:30 - 7:30 am) and have a collection of red spots which appear to be midge bites. Fie. I'm not sure our effective thermocell mosquito repeller is working on midges, and i don't remember having midge issues before... but i may have mistaken bite sites for something else like "chiggers."

Lunch time: I'm having one of my (mild!) trimengial neuraligia flares. But is there also a sore throat? I remembered our old scan-the-forehead thermometer: i'll start using it every time i am thinking, "Fever now?" and save the sanitation sleeves for once or twice a day.

Friday morning

No fever, but some sort of right side, ear to throat discomfort. Christine's sister, who seems a day ahead of Christine with symptoms, tested negative yesterday. Christine hopes to test negative today.

Carrie seems to have made it through two nights without her muzzle wearing just "pants" to protect her leg wounds. I did tape the cuff on the leg with the healing wounds one night, and the next just wrapped the one on her ankle so the pants (damp from the wet yard) could dry out.

I have nothing nice to say about scientific debates being resolved by legislators.
