Title: Wardens of Ivalice, Part One: The Joining
Fandoms: Dragon Age & Final Fantasy XII
Rating: T
Wordcount: 26,909
Characters: Ashe, Balthier, Basch, Fran, Elissa Cousland, Alistair, Nathaniel Howe, Alim Surana, many others.
Pairings: Ashe/Balthier, Alistair/Cousland. For now.
Spoilers: For FFXII and Dragon Age: Origins. Includes characters from Awakening but no major spoilers. No references to DA2.
Notes: So here it is, unleashed upon the world at last: my giant crossover of doom. I've never attempted a crossover of this magnitude before, so I hope it works. Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks to everyone who encouraged me to take this direction, and to all my IM friends who haven't played Dragon Age but put up with my babbling and idea-flings regardless. Enjoy!

Summary: Two years after war's end, Queen Ashe is confronted with a new threat: an invading darkspawn army, bursting from underground caverns throughout the world. Fortunately for Ivalice, Warden-Commander Elissa Cousland and her team of Grey Wardens are not far behind.

Looks like stupid Ed Lee won the stupid mayor's race. They're not officially calling it yet -- some absentee and provisional ballots left to count -- but he declared victory this afternoon. Dear San Francisco politicians: can we maybe get it together and run a smaller field next time? You do not all need to be mayor.

Work was stressful and annoying for reasons I'd rather not get into right now. Shoes keep dropping, but it never feels like the last one has fallen.

Mega Flare would be going well, but there's this one scene that I really hate, and I don't know how to fix it. I suppose I could cut it, but there's some important character interaction and canon crossing stuff. So I need to wrangle it into submission, somehow. I knew I should have put more effort into finding a beta.

Our water heater is leaking gas fumes, and last night I noticed that I was getting lightheaded when I sat at my desk for too long. T's upstairs trying to fix it right now, but he's not too hopeful.

At least there is new Top Chef tonight.

A friend invited me to a writing day at his house today. I've never done writing in a group setting before -- by myself in cafes, yes, all the time, but never with other people who were also writing during specified blocks of time (social hour, two hours of writing, half hour break, two more hours of writing). I was curious to see how it would work for me -- would being in the presence of other writers, all (as far as I know) working on original fiction, some friends and some strangers, make me too self-conscious to write? I wasn't 100% certain I could be productive.

Four hours, 4,434 words, and a near-complete draft of my Mega Flare story later, I can safely say: yes, it does work for me, and very well. Especially for the kind of word dump writing I need to do today. I plugged in my headphones, mostly turned off the social Internet (I kept access up for checking maps and stuff, and did look at my mail a few times, but I purposefully logged out of IM), and just wrote. Every scene that I knew I still needed to draft, plus a couple I didn't know I needed until I started writing them. It was an excellent exercise, and I'm feeling much better about my chances of getting this story actually done.

Next step: stitch the thing together (I'm trying out Scrivener for the first time, which I think has been pretty effective for a longer story written out of order; I really wish I'd had it for "A Guardian's Legacy") and see what's missing. Then write what's missing, smooth the transitions, fix up the end a little, and come up with a title. Totally doable in five days. Right? Right.

Specific goals:

1. Write an average of six days per week. Done.

2. Finish and submit [community profile] newgameplus story. Successful, with a few hours to spare!

3. Complete draft of Mega Flare story Ummmmmm... Well. I made progress. But not as much as I would like.

4. Finish and post "Old Friends" followup or one of my other Dragon Age WIP. Posted two chapters of "Separation of Powers". So, not finished, but progress at least.

So, I managed the one thing that I absolutely had to do, but not the other thing that I kind of absolutely had to do. And now it's November, which has all kinds of challenges -- Mega Flare is due, NaBloWriMo (which I am doing, though I haven't talked about it yet, so I suppose this post is my official declaration of intent), a concert week, Thanksgiving, and visits from out of town friends two weekends in a row. But deadlines and projects come as they will, so I'll make of it what I can. With all this in mind, my goals:

1. Write or edit fic every day until my Mega Flare is done, at least five days a week thereafter.

2. Post to my journal every day, and at least three substantial posts per week. This is a light goal for NaBloWriMo, for me, but given how little I've been posting lately I think that makes enough of a challenge.

3. Finish and post Mega Flare story... for certain values of "finished". It has become increasingly clear that, even if I dropped everything else and did nothing but write for the next two weeks, it wouldn't be completely done. But I do have a pretty decent draft for what feels like a complete "Part One." So that's my goal: fill the gaps and polish up to the break point, and then post the first half of the story, with the intention of getting Part Two finished by early next year. It'll still be over my selected wordcount, and it'll be a much better, more polished entry than a half-assed rough draft of the complete story would be. Or so I keep telling myself... Because of various scheduling issues, I have a hard deadline on this one: Friday, November 11th.

4. Complete and post the final chapter(s) of "Separation of Powers" and my current [livejournal.com profile] dragonage_kink WIP.

This, I feel, is more than enough. Wish me luck.

Hey everyone, hey hey hey, [community profile] megaflare_ff story claiming for artists is open until Sunday 10/3! We have 10 great-looking stories across several different FF canons, and so far only one is claimed. That's a lot of opportunity left for the right artist. Come check it out!

Other fannish things: making decent progress on my Mega Flare, but currently taking a break to work on my [community profile] newgameplus assignment, since that's due much sooner -- yes, I did decide to sign up, and it's going a little slowly, but not too bad; I like my prompt a lot -- and a sequel of sorts to my Anders + Cousland story, which is threatening to become yet another monster. What is it about Dragon Age that compels me to write mini epics? I've been playing around in prompt memes a little bit, too, with mixed results, but it's still fun to write up little ideas I'd never do anything with otherwise. On the gaming front, I'm closing in on endgame for my m!Surana replay (I could trigger the Landsmeet, but there are a few little things I want to clear out first); next I think I'll play Awakening again, with f!Cousland this time, and then use that as the backstory for my first DA2 replay (since that will get me Warden!Alistair).

Linkspam: in the name of sharing cool stuff and closing out some tabs, here are some links following up on things I've posted about recently:

1. Game of Thrones/Sady Doyle -- A Kind of Half-Hearted Defense of "A Game of Thrones" by braak (hat tip to [personal profile] lowkey for the link) which does an excellent job of pulling out the problems I had with both Doyle's review and the way she framed it:

I want her to be right, but I feel like her argument here is a little inaccurate. And worse: it’s framed in a way that makes me feel like not only can I not defend the series, but I can’t even ask for a more nuanced discussion of the subject without branding myself a raging misogynist fanboy. It’s like I’ve been set up in such a way that my choices are: agree, or else dismiss myself by the very virtue of my disagreement.

Go read the whole thing; it's very worth it.

2. Another thing worth reading in its entirety: [personal profile] cleolinda's overview of the Gay YA issue. If you haven't been following the story, it's a great way to catch up; if you have been following it, you've probably seen this already, but I link it for you just in case.

Life: Another quarter is about to end, thank god. This quarter has just been beyond difficult, for reasons I can't really talk about here; none of them are going away, really, but I hope with the new quarter we can reset and figure out a way to make it all more manageable. Only one week of break, and we're spending the first bit of it in San Diego, making our annual summer trip to visit T's mom. On the upside, he's finally going to install wireless at her house, so we'll be Internet-enabled for once. Should be a nice change.

I have to admit it: I am kind of in love with this DA/FFXII crossover. It's starting to really work for me. And I am going to spam you all with a snippet that only half of you will half-understand. That's just how my obsessions roll right now.

Context: Grey Wardens have tracked a darkspawn horde to Ivalice and are recruiting from among the local populace. Balthier and Basch are among the first group of recruits for various reasons. Nathaniel and m!Surana (who is not "The Warden" in this universe, just one of their number -- f!Cousland is Warden-Commander) are about to board the Strahl for the first time.

ExpandSnippet time! )

Considering how uncertain I was of this idea at first, I'm really excited by how smoothly things are coming together. Maybe not smoothly enough to have a rough draft in less than two weeks (who decided having such an early deadline was a good idea? Oh, right, that would be me), but certainly better than it was before. 13,000 words but with a ways to go, plotwise. So we'll see. But I am feeling hopeful, at least for tonight.

Hey, fandom folks! Check out all this STUFF going on!

1. DOINK! (aka [community profile] ff_exchange) presents: Chocobo Races! A team-and-points based competition to see who can create the most Chocobo Down. I always write a CD story or two, and this sounds like a fun incentive. Come join me on Team Tonberry! (Or, you know, if you must choose Team Cactaur, I suppose that's okay, too.) Rules are here, sign-ups are here. You don't need to have participated in FFEX in the past.

2. Another round of [community profile] newgameplus is open for sign-ups through Saturday, and they are looking for more players! I confess, I am waffling a little on this one: partly because I'm a little nervous about offering in Dragon Age when I haven't finished DA2 yet, partly because I'm worried about making a hard commitment that overlaps with the Mega Flare timeframe, partly because I'm having a hard time coming up with request prompts. But I really want to play -- I haven't done one of the regular exchanges in this community yet, and I'd like to. Fortunately I have a few days to decide yet.

3. Speaking of Mega Flare... don't forget that sign-ups for artists are still open! I kind of can't believe that the rough draft deadline is only a few weeks away. Where did August go? My story is progressing, though, and considering that I completely threw out my old idea and started with a new one just two weeks ago, I think I'm doing okay. At some point I may need to ask for some help; none of my usual brainstorming partners have played Dragon Age, and I miss having other minds to bounce ideas around with.

Yes, indeed, we are doing a second round of Mega Flare this year, and signups open today! Check out all the details at [community profile] megaflare_ff. Whee!

As long as I'm here, I might as well finish up the 30 days meme. I've noticed that pretty much no one has managed to draw this out over 30 days, and I see why; most of the questions are too short-answer to really justify a whole entry, and neither do they really invite discussion or debate. But I hate leaving projects undone, so here we go!

Day 21 – Favourite Final Fantasy pairing/ship.

If you have to ask, then you haven't known me very long. The answer is Paine/Nooj. First, last, and always.

More recently, I have also gotten really into Ashe/Balthier and Ashe/Al-Cid, the latter of which is sadly underrepresented in the fandom.

Day 22 – Favourite Final Fantasy summon.

Bahamut in Final Fantasy X. Not only does he kick ass in battle, he's integrated into the story in a way I haven't found another summon to equal. Also, I think his design is beautiful, especially his fayth statue.

Day 23 – Least Favourite Final Fantasy mini game.

The aforementioned butterflies are way up there. Also, monkey matchmaking. Really, Squeenix? Really? I also never got anywhere with the Calm Lands publicity game.

Day 24 – Best Final Fantasy quote.

"This is your world now."

Day 25 – Final Fantasy game you plan on playing (old or new).

Top of my list is Final Fantasy VI. I started it last year, set it aside because I got stuck on a boss battle, then got distracted and never picked it back up. I really want to finish it, though. I'm also looking forward to Versus, if it ever gets finished.

Day 26 – OMG WTF? Final Fantasy moment.

In Final Fantasy VIII, when you learn about their past in the orphanage. That bit of backstory stretches my credulity and breaks my brain. I don't know why that particular thing, of all the ridiculous coincidences that happen in every Final Fantasy game, strikes me so, but it always has. Particularly Irvine's reasons for not 'fessing up. I mean, what?

Day 27 – Best Final Fantasy storyline.

FFX, hands down. I love the story and the way the game tells it.

Day 28 – First Final Fantasy game obsession.

I think I have to give FFX-2 the nod over FFX, if only because that was the game that pulled me into being active in fandom.

Day 29 – Current Final Fantasy game obsession.

Dragon Age Final Fantasy XII. The more I read and write, the more drawn I am into the characters and the universe. So much possibility for interesting futures.

Day 30 – Saddest Final Fantasy character death.

And once again on getting drummed out of the fandom, but my answer to this question has to be Tidus. That ending scene, where Yuna tries to catch him and falls on the deck? Ouch. The way he faces the end of his existence with such calm and grace, never complaining, never angsting about it. He does what needs to be done, and then he says goodbye. I get misty, every time.

So, yeah. I wrote more fic in the month of May than I have in the rest of 2011 combined. Such is the joy of discovering a new fandom. I haven't had a rush like this since... wow, I don't know. Years. I did write more fic in one month last October, when I finished major composition on my first Mega Flare, but that was different. More focused. It actually felt more like an accomplishment, whereas this is more like when I started writing for the first time, with thousands of new ideas flowing and directions to go.

Anyway, specific goals, although they seem sort of irrelevant in the face of the above....

1. Write an average of six days a week. And how.

2. Write and post at least one [community profile] newgameplus request. Success!

3. Wrap up and post my two WIPs started in April (my [community profile] ff_exchange fic... and one other). Done and done -- the "other" was the Dragon Age fic that I posted today. I did a pinch hit for Doink! as well.

4. Start working on documentation and posts for the 2011 round of [community profile] megaflare_ff. Started, posted the rules/intro post, but I didn't get as much on this as I would have liked. That'll have to be my priority for the rest of the week, because signups open on Sunday! Hooray!

So, let's see about June.

1. Write an average of six days per week.

2. Finish "Aftermath". Finish "Aftermath". Finish Aftermath.

3. Finish [community profile] megaflare_ff documentation and start fleshing out my story idea.

4. Complete draft of current DA WIP.

5. Write at least one more [community profile] newgameplus story -- I have such awesome prompts and I'd like to give them more love.

Pretty ambitious, but doable, especially if my inspiration carries over and transfers.

Yes, that's right: [personal profile] renay and I are hard at working putting another round together. But we need your thoughts first! So please check out our feedback poll. Even if you didn't sign up last time, but might be interested in signing up in the future, we want to know what you think. The poll will be open through Monday. And keep your eye on the community (Dreamwidth / LiveJournal) for announcements about the next round soon!

So with this post, I have done it: a public post every day in November, a goal I have now accomplished four years out of the last five (in 2009 I missed one day because I was sick).

One downside of doing the same project every year is that it starts feeling less like an accomplishment and more like a given. "Of course I succeeded at NaBloWriMo, I didn't come down with a sinus infection of doom." So maybe it's time to think about mixing it up next year. Maybe doing it in a different month; maybe sticking closer to a theme.

Anyway, November writing wrap-up:

ExpandChart me, baby! )

Specific Goals:

1. Write at least 6 days per week. Almost. I missed two days in a row right after completing "Reconcilable Differences". But I think I can be excused for that...

2. Complete and post the Mega Flare story. Done. Done and done. Mere words cannot described how happy I am to have this story finished. I think it came out pretty well, too.

3. Write a substantial post every day, based on the "30 Days of Me" list of questions. As mentioned above, I did post every day in November, although the definition of "substantial" tended to vary. I also answered all the questions on the meme (except for one that didn't come in until a couple of hours ago). There are still a few slots open! Six, to be exact. Anyone interested is more than welcome to leave another question or two on LJ or DW, although I no longer make any promises to do one per day. ;)

4. Write and post [community profile] intoabar story. I got a complete draft done, but I wasn't very happy with it, and my beta resources were stretched too thin as it was, so I opted to default instead. I may clean it up, or take another go, and post it later, but for now it's deprioritized.

Other stories posted and worked on this month: I made nice progress on "Aftermath", which is awesome! I also was bunnied for a short on Isaaru that basically came from nowhere, de-annoned on the above-mentioned FYFF fills, and poked at little at the Alice/Pirates crossover. A successful month overall, despite the default, although really I was probably going to say that no matter what, given that Mega Flare has wrapped up mostly-successfully.

So now we turn to December and thoughts of rounding out the year:

1. Write at least five days per week (down from six to account for travel and other holiday obligations).

2. Finish the last chapter of "Aftermath".

3. Wrap up as many WIP as I can -- Alphabet Meme, the crossover, check my files for other things...

4. Claim and write at least one [community profile] areyougame prompt. (Pending a closer look at what's still available; I haven't been over there since before claims opened.)

At some point I need to sit down and think about 2011. What projects should I focus on? Does it make sense to sign up for [livejournal.com profile] getyourwordsout again? Much to consider. But not just yet; let's see how December shapes up first.

Title: Reconcilable Differences
Fandom: FFXII
Rating: R
Wordcount: 55,472 (complete in 5 chapters)
Pairings: Ashe/Al-Cid, Ashe/Balthier
Characters: Ashe, Al-Cid, Balthier, Basch, Ondore, most of the main cast, and more OCs than you can shake a stick at.
Spoilers: Yes, for the whole game, and some minor RW references as well. (I have not played RW, so please pardon any errors.)
Notes: My story for [community profile] megaflare_ff, 2010. This is the FFXII story I have long wanted to write, and I'm so glad this challenge gave me the push to sit down and write it. Major, major thanks to [personal profile] justira for serving as my idea sounding board and moral support, and to [personal profile] renay for beta reading, title help, and being my favorite co-mod.

Summary: After the war, Ashe is preparing to become queen, but there are many treacherous political waters to navigate first: proving her fitness to sit the throne, balancing Dalmascan independence with Empires on either side, settling the question of who will rule Nabradia. Into this situation steps a new ally: Al-Cid Margrace. Al-Cid is dealing with a political morass of his own; although many within Rozarria are relieved to have stayed out of active hostilities, others had hoped to weaken Archadia and expand into new territory for the first time in fifty years -- and chief among the latter faction is the crown prince. Together and separately, Ashe and Al-Cid set out to discover new truths and forge new alliances on their path to a peaceful Ivalice.

And then Balthier reappears, to throw all of Ashe's plans and emotions into disarray.

Because I have learned to set realistic expectations for myself during a concert week, I am skipping answering a question from my meme today. I'll probably skip Thursday as well. (I have a better chance of following through on Friday, because I have the day off of work.) Whether I answer two questions on a few days to make up for it, or just do fewer questions, depends entirely on whether you folks fill the entire month up. ;)

The piece is Vaughan Williams's Hodie; it will probably never be one of my favorites, but there are some segments of it that I like very much -- parts that are fun to listen to, parts that are fun to sing. The tough bit is the venue: Stanford Memorial Church is a lovely space, but it's very echoey, and it's very hard for us to hear ourselves over the orchestra. The first time through any piece, particularly, is a real challenge. Still, overall our first dress went pretty well, and I'm looking forward to the concert.

Work continues to plod along. It's between midterms and ramping up for finals, so things are fairly quiet right now. Calm before the storm, as they say.

I finished the first edit of my Mega Flare; now it just needs one more run-through, and a title. Why do I have such a hard time coming up with titles? I've auditioned a few ideas and hate them all. Titles and endings: my nemeses. Although once I found the ending for this story, I was instantly happy with it. Maybe I'll feel the same way about the title, once it presents itself.

[personal profile] lassarina asked about my experiences playing Tabletop (or what I think of as "pencil-and-dice") RPGs.

I have long enjoyed playing RPGs. My introduction to the genre came from [livejournal.com profile] oswulf, who was a big fan and had all kinds of systems; D&D, Gurps, and Star Frontiers are the ones I remember offhand. Starting from our pre-teen years, we would play whenever we could, which was unfortunately not on a regular enough basis to get a long campaign going. But it was still always fun, and led to, among other things, a life-long running gag regarding the dangers of chairs.

The first time I ever got involved in a regular campaign was during my college years -- not while I was away at school, but when I came home for breaks. D and S, the guys I was sort-of dating during much of that time (yes, at the same time; yes, they both knew about it; yes, it's a long story that's only tangentially related, and maybe I will tell it sometime, but not today) were both big gamers, and D invited me to join a long-running Advanced Dungeons & Dragons campaign that he'd been running since high school, and I gladly accepted, taking on an Elf ranger-type fighter who hated humans and didn't much care for other races, either. That campaign led to many others; some of the more memorable were a couple of Star Wars games (one in which I played a hotshot Imperial pilot who defected after Yavin, and another in which I was the daughter of a spaceship manufacturer who went into business for herself shipping X-Wings to the Rebellion -- she is officially my favorite player character ever), a few rounds of Call of Cthulu (to the GM's consternation, I decided to play a woman famous for writing books about organic gardening, which is not your usual Cthulu mythos character), a Teenagers from Outer Space campaign that sadly ran for only a few sessions but featured some of the most fun I've ever had gaming (I played a goth girl who drove a black VW Thing with the best stereo system in the known universe), and a one-night D&D one shot where I ended up getting myself and most of the rest of my party killed in the gladiator ring. I've also dabbled in Mage (the character I created for that game is one I've thought about resurrecting for a story some day), Champions, and Shadowrun.

After graduation, I moved away from that group of friends, and I've never been in a position to game regularly since. A couple of years ago, I was invited to play in a short campaign run by Jed, in a system he created himself, and that was one of my best gaming experiences ever; it was more like participating in an interactive story, which when well-done is something I love. I like a GM who can think on their feet and allow the players some freedom while still guiding them down the intended path.

I've done a couple of one-shot live-action RPGs also, run by my friend E, and they were a blast. I would definitely be up for doing something like that again. One thing I've never done is acted as GM myself, and I'm perfectly fine with that -- I think I'm much happier as a player, along for the ride.

Would I play regularly again if the opportunity presented itself? Probably, although making time for regular gaming sessions is tough, as we discovered during Jed's short-term game. That's the main reason I haven't sought out a gaming group -- time. That said, if another short-term gaming opportunity comes up, you can be sure that I'll jump on it.

Finally, no discussion of RPGs would be complete for me without a mention of dice. I love dice. I love how they look, I love the feel of them in my hand, I love the sound they make when they're rolled. There's something so tactile about them, unlike any other fidget toy. I have many more sets than I reasonably could need, just because I think they're awesome.

30 Days of... Project! Complete list of questions / Ask a question on LJ or on DW.

In other news, I didn't quite finish the story. Almost; I could probably post it as is, but really it needs at least one more editing run to be presentable. Fortunately (?), Yuletide signups have AO3 running so slowly that we decided to extend the deadline by a week to save everyone the frustration of trying to upload, so I have a bit of a reprieve (and so do the rest of you!). Fingers crossed, it will be ready in the next couple of days.
owlmoose: (writing - slave)
Skipping the planned question because I hit a milestone today, and I want to talk about it a little. I'll get back on my (slightly tweaked, to account for a crazy few days coming up) schedule tomorrow.

When I first came into fandom, finding time and motivation to write was never a problem, because I was driven by a need to tell the stories in my head. A Guardian's Legacy, the Confessional and the collaborations with Ikon: all of these drove me through 2005 and 2006, and in those two years, I was highly productive.

Then the first rush wore off, as first rushes often do, and some tough things came down in my life -- work issues, personal life issues. And it became much harder to sit myself down and really work on stories. They were still in my head, I still had rushes of inspiration and times when schedules and plodding would keep me moving, but I would also go days or even weeks without doing any serious work.

I had played a little bit with tracking words and goal setting in the early days of 2009, but I only kept it up through mid-March, partly because travel wreaked havoc with my schedule at the start of the month, and then life decided to turn completely upside-down for a few months. Once it had righted itself, it was time for [community profile] ff_exchange, and that got me moving for awhile, but only for awhile. So when December came around, and I saw some friends signing up for [livejournal.com profile] getyourwordsout, I decided to give it a whirl. The minimum wordcount goal gave me pause -- 200,000 words is a lot when you haven't been doing well at writing regularly -- but I decided to go for it anyway. I didn't expect to hit the target; I just wanted the challenge for the structure, an outside source to be accountable to. So I made my spreadsheets, and I wrote my monthly goals posts, complete with charts (an idea shamelessly stolen from [personal profile] seventhe) and started plugging away.

And then October came, and October went, and I had over 180,000 words.

Suddenly, 200,000 wasn't seeming so far out of reach. And today, with over 2k words on my Mega Flare alone, I have reached that goal, and surpassed it, with over a month and a half to go in 2010.

Of course, over 25% of those words so far are on one story. (No points for guessing which one.) And since this isn't a story I had any idea I was going to write at the start of the year, I think it's reasonable that this caught me by surprise. Will I be able to do it again next year? Currently, my thinking is no, but if this year has taught me anything, it's not to underestimate myself, and my ability to schedule writing time for myself if I really want to make it a priority. And that's a good thing.

2. COMPLETE DRAFT OF MEGA FLARE STORY OMG. For certain values of "complete", perhaps. It has a beginning, a middle, and an end, but there are still some gaps. Still, I think I'm on track to post it before the deadline.

3. Write and post the [community profile] intoabar story. Nope. Not even started. I got rolling on the Mega Flare and didn't want to stop.

Two hits, one miss. On to November goals...

1. Write at least 6 days per week.

2. Complete and post the Mega Flare story.

3. Write a substantial post every day, based on the "30 Days of Me" list of questions. There are still plenty of slots! Come check it out, and leave me a question or post topic, especially if you haven't already done so. Post your questions here (DW) or here (LJ).

4. Write and post [community profile] intoabar story. Hopefully I can do this while the Mega Flare in in beta. But if I miss it, not the end of the world; it just means I can't do the next round. Which I would feel bad about, but less bad than if I didn't finish Mega Flare or monthly posting. Priorities, you know.

I can't believe this year is almost over. Almost time to think about how I will tackle writing goals and projects in 2011. Damn.

Yes! Argh!

Yes: I have an ending for my Mega Flare story! Not written yet, but mapped out. I sat down on Thursday and set down the outline for the last several scenes. Finally, after months and months, I actually know where this this is going. Phew.

Argh: Said ending is not yet written, and posting opens in less than two weeks?! /o\

I don't have a title, either, but those usually come to me last, so I'm less concerned about that.

Yes: I've been making fantastic progress lately -- I wrote over three thousand words in one day, Saturday, which is easily my biggest day since I started tracking daily word count at the start of the year. I have, in fact, already surpassed the [livejournal.com profile] getyourwordsout pace for the month. Wow.

Argh (or maybe this is just an OMG): According to MS Word, my story is already 38,000 words. And still. Not. Done. How did this story get so darn complicated? Why did I decide to tack on a complicated subplot last week?

On the other hand, that subplot brought me my ending, so maybe it's not entirely a bad thing.

I still have time. Just keep reminding myself that. Still have time. We all do. Right? Right.

Let's take a look...

Days written: 26/30
Words written: 21,221 (155,329 for the year)
Words of fic written: 14,361
Stories worked on: 2, plus one for FYFF, the Final Fantasy Anonmeme
Stories posted: One ...I mean, none, none! I was too busy with Mega Flare! I didn't post anything in the anonmeme! Why are you looking at me like that?

ExpandHey, look, a chart! )

Specific goals:

1. Write at least 6 days per week. Made, and easily.

2. Finish draft of Mega Flare story. No, but I made good progress. And I think I know what the end is going to be? Maybe? It's approaching 30k words and I still have a ways to go. :-\ But since my story wasn't claimed by an artist, today's draft deadline turns out not to apply, so I feel pretty good about where I am.

3. Write and post at least one substantial journal post per week. Not quite, or at least not how I wanted it to be. My attention was too focused on Mega Flare (and FFVI, and baseball...) to really get into the meaty posts I wanted to write. And now that the actual Mega Flare deadline is approaching -- and fun side projects like FYFF and [community profile] intoabar are competing for mindshare, I'm afraid I'm going to have to set them aside again. But I figure flexibility is the name of the game.

Not bad, not bad. Liking that wordcount, although I'd be happier with more things done. With only three months left in the year, I should probably concentrate on finishing things rather than starting new ones. The crossover and "Aftermath", particularly, and Mega Flare of course. Which means I should probably not give into my current temptation of signing up for Yuletide...

First things first, though: October goals.

1. Write at least 6 days per week. I like it, I'm sticking to it.

2. COMPLETE DRAFT OF MEGA FLARE STORY OMG. It doesn't need to be finished this month, but I am committed to having a full draft within the next couple of weeks.

3. Write and post the [community profile] intoabar story. The prompt is a doozy. Not due until November 8th, but I'd like to get it out of the way before things start really rolling on Mega Flare, so I hope to get it done in the next week or so.

And, that's it. Writing more for FYFF seems likely, making progress on the crossover (and/or Aftermath, which I haven't even opened in a couple of months) would be an excellent bonus, but I'll be more than content with the above.

Did I really go a whole week without posting? I don't remember the last time that happened when I wasn't sick or traveling. And this week was neither, just busy with finals week and all kinds of irritating work stuff that I don't really want to talk about here. So, random update time, Five-Things-Make-a-Post-style:

1. Chorus started this week! Since I didn't sing Spring quarter and I always take the summer off, it seems like it's been forever. We're doing "Hodie" by Vaughn Williams, a piece I do not know. Parts of it are quite beautiful and parts look to be fiendishly tricky, but I'm looking forward to getting to know it. Coming back to singing after a hiatus always makes me happy. The biggest challenge this quarter isn't going to be learning the music, though. Instead, it's going to be getting to Stanford, because of...

2. T's car went to its final reward on Thursday. He was having trouble with it a few weeks ago, and the mechanic pronounced the death sentence: new transmission, a repair that would have cost him far more than the worth of the car. So the mechanic took it off his hands for $500, and now we are, for the time being, a one-car household. He's started the car shopping process, something he tends to be quite methodical about, so it could be awhile. Since we both take public transit to work most days, we could probably make it work for quite awhile, although we are talking about signing up for ZipCar to make it easier. Fortunately there's at least two pick-up spots within easy walking distance. Also, I took my car in this week, and it got a clean bill of health, so I feel better about depending on it as our primary vehicle. It's strange, in a way, because my Civic is three years older than his Accord was, and I had always expected it to go first. On the other hand, these little Civics have a reputation for lasting forever, and so far it's living up to that reputation. It's a good little car, and it makes me happy, so I'm content to keep it running for awhile longer.

3. I keep churning away on the Mega Flare story. A scene here, a few words there. At this point I don't think I'm going to have a draft by October 1st, although anything is possible, but since I'm not working with an artist, it doesn't matter much if I miss that particular deadline. If I keep up this pace (and ideally kick it up a bit), I don't have any real worries about not finishing by the hard deadline, which is mid-November. Assuming I can come up with an ending I like.

4. I checked out one new TV series so far, Undercovers, the new JJ Abrams show about a married couple who met when they were CIA agents and retired to get married. The pilot shows them coming out of retirement and working together for the first time. I had been hearing some buzz about it, partly because it's Abrams and partly because the leads are black (the characters are African-American but both actors are from Europe); both of those aspects caught my interest, but I'm watching mostly because I saw a preview for the series on Scott Pilgrim that made it look entertaining. I liked the pilot enough to record the second episode, so we shall see.

Also, Top Chef: Just Desserts, two weeks in: I like Gail, I like Johnny (although I'll like him better when he finds his own voice and stops trying so hard to be Tom Colicchio), but oh my god I hope they dial back on the inter-contestant drama, or it's going to get unwatchable real quick. If they don't get rid of [spoiler] next week, I might have to give up on it, or at the very least watch on heavy fast-forward.

5. Nothing much planned for this weekend, which pleases me, because these last two work weeks have involved a lot of running around and a lot of stress. Working a six-day week followed by a five-day week always drags me down; I should really remember to make better arrangements to get a short week immediately after covering a Saturday. On the other hand, this way I get a Monday off in the midst of our first honest-to-goodness heatwave, so maybe I shouldn't complain too much.
owlmoose: (ff12 - al-cid)
I just spent an hour drawing up a family tree for House Margrace. Just one generation of direct descendants and a few assorted out-of-wedlock births, mind you -- I didn't even attempt to figure out aunts and uncles and cousins. (Yet.) Al-Cid and his siblings were enough trouble by themselves. But I keep coming up with names and relationships as I write the story, and I decided I'd better at least settle that once and for all. If nothing else, I need to make sure that their ages in relation to each other and Ivalice world history make sense.

18,551. And counting. Earlier today, I came up with a couple of politicking twists, and some reasons for people to do things, and I'm pretty happy with them all. So the story continues to take shape! Except for the end, of course. Someday, I will discover the ending of this story, but that day is not today.
