(Don't know what Moose Day is? See here.) Today has been fairly lazy -- breakfast at the cafe across the street, then spent some time upgrading the software on all my devices before we went for lunch (Thai) and a walk (before the rains come tonight). This evening I expect will be mostly leftovers and Dragon Age. So, not really a traditional holiday (typically, one goes out for high tea on Moose Day), but nice all the same. I should really get my act together to plan something next year, though.

[personal profile] pete_thomas asked me for the origins of my username. I think I may have told this story on LJ, many moons ago, but I can't easily find the link, and I've met many new people since then, so I don't mind telling it again.

The owl and the moose are two animals that were emblematic of my college years, a time I look back upon with great fondness. The owl is fairly easy to explain: Athena is the unofficial "patron goddess" of Bryn Mawr (being representative of wisdom), and the owl is one of her icons. So the owl is the closest thing we have to a mascot, and many Mawrters feel an affinity toward them. The moose part, well. That's a bit more random. The short version is that my friend JR came back from summer vacation our sophomore year with the habit of saying the word "moose" at random times. This habit turns out to be very contagious. Before winter break, we were all saying the word "moose" at random times -- it served as a greeting, a farewell, an exclamation, a nickname, an expression of affection....

Many years later, when I was looking for a new Internet username unconnected to previous ones, I hit upon combining the two animal names. Hence, owlmoose, which evolved into my fandom handle -- I use it everywhere fannish except for Twitter and Tumblr. As far as I know, I'm the only person who uses it, so if you come across an owlmoose, it is almost certainly me. :)

From the January Prompts meme (On DW / On LJ). Many slots remain open, especially in the latter half of the month!

So much was going on yesterday that I forgot to wish everyone a very happy Moose Day. (Don't know what Moose Day is? A sort-of explanation can be found here.)

I need to figure out some sort of celebration, but I'm out of town next weekend, so-- or maybe I can convince Ira, Sev, and Nay to celebrate a Moose Day with me...

It's Moose Day! Kick up your hooves and celebrate. (Don't know what Moose Day is? An explanation of sorts can be found here.)

Instead of the usual high tea celebration, this year I'm going to a second Thanksgiving dinner -- yesterday I spent with family, and today is for friends. I love Thanksgiving dinner, so this is a most excellent development. There are plans for tea later in December, which is also good. However you are planning to observe today -- whether as Moose Day, Black Friday, or just another day of the week -- I hope you have a good one!

Happy Moose Day! (Don't know what Moose Day is? Click here and be enlightened.)

I planned no official celebration this year, but it was still a good, laid-back day: we paid a visit to the ocean, and there is now pumpkin pie cooling on the counter and crab waiting in the fridge. So I am content. Hopefully I will get folks together for tea sometime soon.

Raise a cup of tea (pinky extended please) and leave your best haiku in the comments.

Long weekend + [livejournal.com profile] amybang in town = KJ is a lot less around on the internets.

We did the spa thing on Friday, which was lovely yet oddly tiring. Or maybe it was just the effect of being truly relaxed that put me out like a light that night. Many games were also involved -- [livejournal.com profile] amybang got me a copy of Rayman Raving Rabbids for the Wii, which was mighty entertaining, especially the dancing and "first plunger shooter" levels. Recommended if you like wacky fun! Also I borrowed DDR from S awhile back, and yesterday we played, at first head-to-head but we quickly moved to taking turns. DDR is a *lot* of work; we actually had to change into better workout clothes and then take showers afterwards! I don't think it would be possible for me to play it casually. But as a workout game, definitely; I should see if I can get myself in the habit. In between, I also played a bunch of PuzzleQuest on my DS. That game is seriously addicting. We got another level of Phoenix Wright in, too, to finish off the second case. Hopefully we'll get some more of that in soon.

Now I'm winding down from my long weekend (due to the quirks of our academic schedule, we had Friday off instead of tomorrow for President's Day, so my three-day weekend is ending just as everyone else is just getting started): catching up online, contemplating writing another kiss or two before dinner, reading my book, tracking down pictures of albino moose (turns out they are not true albino, but just a color variation that's normal in moose, if rare). It's the little things that make me content.

Boy uses skills learned in World of Warcraft to save himself and his sister from a moose attack.

So the next time someone accuses you of wasting your life playing games, you can tell them that you're actually learning valuable survival tools.

I shall now present
A post written in haiku
To honor Moose Day

Thanksgiving dinner
Turkey, stuffing, gravy, rolls
And two kinds of pie

For family time
A brother comes to visit
The other one calls

No time to plan tea
Tea shop found on random walk
Grand coincidence

House blend of Assam
Many others on display
Another next time

As darkness now falls
We read in bed, also websurf
Soon we will find food

So as Moose Day ends
I think on tea and on friends
And hope for both soon

Here in Seattle, had a lovely day yesterday. Delicious tea, wonderful company, fun wandering (even if it is a bit chilly). [livejournal.com profile] luvmoose gives a complete report here, complete with photos and haiku.

Special bonus haiku, sent long-distance by [livejournal.com profile] anzubird:
In New York missing
Seattle moose gathering
But, beer in Brooklyn!

Now we are off to Portland. I've never really visited Portland so I am looking forward to it, even if we'll only be there for about 24 hours. Road trip!

The moose test.

"The Moose test, also known as the Elk test, Älgtest in Swedish, has been used in Sweden for decades to test how a certain vehicle, usually an automobile, acts when avoiding a sudden danger, such as a moose."

I had never heard of this before. The dangers of moose on roadways, yes, but never this moose test concept. Perhaps I should not be so amused. And yet....

Norwegian town offers moose adoptions

This is actually kind of tempting....

I would like to wish everyone a very happy Moose Day.

Since my official celebration was last week, I don't have anything particularly moosey planned, although soon I'll be heading out to E's place for an afternoon of cheese tasting. Tea will probably be involved, though. At E's place, it usually is.

By now, I'm sure at least some of you are wondering: what the hell is Moose Day? Here's an attempt at an explanation, but be warned, it is a convoluted story. And sort of weird. Definitely silly. )

Moose!

Although Moose Day is normally celebrated the day after Thanksgiving, the presence of [livejournal.com profile] anzubird and [livejournal.com profile] luvmoose necessitated an early observance. To that end, I threw a small tea at Lovejoy's this afternoon. The writing of haiku is a traditional part of this event, and I present our creations here.

Have a lovely, tea-drinking, haiku-writing, antler-tossing day.

I'll be going to Lovejoy's Tea Room with a small group of folks. I took a massive group there one year, but this year too many people are either going out of town or have relatives here. Maybe I'll have a Moose Day (Observed) party in January or something for those who were unable to make today.
